Sadly the room wasn’t clean at all. There was dust and plastic trash on both bed side tables. Other guest left some food leftovers on the fridge which had a weird smell and we reported this but they didn’t do much about it.

The hotel facilities are extremely old. The previous tenant's garbage was not cleaned up in the room. I felt inexplicably uncomfortable when I entered the room. It was depressing and scary. There was no sound insulation. The music from the bar downstairs continued until the early morning. The refrigerator in the room was placed in the toilet. The compressor made noises all night. There were other inexplicable noises. Someone opened the door in the middle of the night. I was afraid to fall asleep all night. The worst hotel I have ever stayed in. It is not as good as the domestic chain. The manager did not give a refund. I booked 4 nights but only stayed 2 nights.

Parking is a block and a half away from hotel. The garage closes at 6pm today, so if we want to use our car this evening, we have to get a key from the front desk to unlock the (gate?) we were told we have to return the key which means one of us has to get out of the car on an adjacent street and run the key back to front desk. I guess we have to repeat the process when we get back? Upon checking in, I asked if the room had good air conditioning. The clerk looked at me and said “We do not advertise air conditioning.” I said, “Does that mean you have no air conditioning in the room?”He said the room has air conditioning but we don’t advertise that. “ No matter how I asked, the answer was “We don’t advertise that.” Turns out, the room did have an air conditioner window unit that was plugged into an extension cord with three other electrical cords. Not the safest scenario, but, at least, the AC unit worked. There are two televisions in the room, one in the living room and a tiny one in the bedroom. We finally got the living room tv to work after one of us took the remote downstairs to the front desk and asked how to use it. The same clerk from earlier gave a convoluted explanation about having to use two remotes. It was ridiculous. We never got the smaller tv to work. This hotel has a bit of charm as far as the rooms go, but I will never stay here, again. Too many problems and very poor communication with staff members.

The staff was very helpful and responsive. Location was wonderful. Penthouse was very quiet. Layout was a bit odd but it met our needs.

The hotel was fine, in that it was quaint, the staff were great, the room was OK. Oddly, my roommate told me she was worried about me, as I was gasping for air, like sleep apnea, but gasping. She was also annoyed as it wrecked her sleep. I had noticed the smell of whatever is in A535 rub when we came in the room, and opened the window. I'm somewhat sensitive to that scent, and wonder if it affected my sleep, as I closed the window later due to gull noise. At home again I monitored my sleep for a few nights, and barely snored. So I'm not sure what it was. Other reviews mention a few things, so I would simply suggest, if you have allergies.... The location was great if you want to be downtown, except for getting there and to parking. With sporadic street closures, Google maps has a hard time assisting, and the parking is 2 blocks from the hotel. The temp parking for baggage drop-off was a painful odyssey. The suite I was promised when I booked was misleading, but I went through a 3rd party- just call the hotel front desk to book. 3rd party booking service was useless for making changes later. There is a mini fridge in the room we booked, a small stove and sink, pots etc. at reception. But I would never cook there. I had originally planned a week and thought we had a kitchenette. And was promised a separate sitting room. There was a coffee maker, coffee and creamer, but no tea. Personally as a former frequent work traveler, I'd rather have a microwave than a stove. You have to request maid service, or you don't get it. ( at least we didn't, and others report same). On a good note- reasonably quiet on the 3rd and 4th floor courtyard rooms. The room appeared clean. The outlets are a bit bizarre with only one near one bed, and quite a few near the other. Tricky to charge devices. The bathroom door is heavy, opaqueish glass, and the bathroom light glares at the one bed everytime it's on, so easy to wake up your roomie. The shower knob is weird, and placed so that you HAVE to get a cold blast to have a shower. A smarter design would be to have it at the other end. So, OK, but not great. We spent the rest of our week in a whole house air b and b in Oak Bay, which had it's drawbacks too, but it was better all around for us. So choose the location wisely, 1 night downtown would have been enough. I don't think I'd stay downtown again.
