I had very fond childhood memories of family holidays at the Breakers resort and was looking forward to our overnight stay. We walked into the suite and our noses were immediately assaulted by the overpowering stench of old cigarettes and industrial strength levels of air freshener. We opened every window we could find and left the room airing in the hope that it would smell better on our return. However this was NOT to be. In desperation we unplugged and put the air freshener diffuser in the empty fridge so we only had 1 smell to contend with and it was immediately a huge relief to be rid of what is usually a very pleasant smell, but not when it is mixed with old cigarettes. This same old cigarette smell had put down roots in the suite and had permeated the pillows, bedding, curtains, the very WALLS of the place. There was NO respite from it.
Nobody slept well. I personally woke with a headache from my nicotine-encrusted pillow and to add insult to injury there were no courtesy teabags or milk provided, only little sachets of budget brand Ricoffy (3 for the 4 of us to share). I do believe that given the premium price I paid for our stay, the least we could have expected was decent coffee and tea, along with fresh air to breathe! We left at 5am, tired and grumpy and very eager to shower away our terrible night. The front desk staff member informed us Room 324 is separate from the rest of the resort so I'm sure the rest of the place is just as lovely as I remember but that particular room was awful last night.
