Cultural Immersion: Strong emphasis on Shugendo/Shinto-Buddhist traditions, including morning prayers, spiritual rituals, and access to sacred sites like Mount Haguro.

You can go to Japan and stay in a chain hotel in a city, or you can go into the mountains, breathe the fresh air among the trees, and experience the "real Japan" away from the crowds in this welcoming, clean, beautifully-constructed comfortable traditional pilgrim's lodge. The food is wonderful and from the area (a UNESCO city of gastronomy) and of course, you can end your day with a restful soak in hot water. Nearby, there are restaurants, shops, visitor's centers, and most-important, Mt. Haguro, a place of beauty, nature, history and spiritual significance no matter what your own faith may be. Traditionally, people from many parts of Japan WALKED to Touge to stay in the shukubo (pilgrim's lodge) and connect with nature and the kami of the Dewa Sanzan mountains, which include Haguro-san. People still come, although by bus, train, plane, taxi or car. This is the "real deal", a lodge that still exists, and you can attend morning prayers with translation available for non-Japanese speakers. A visit to Haguro-san, and a stay in Daishinbo/Daishimbo will change and invigorate you, and you'll want to return.

It was my first time staying in a lodging, and it felt like an inn. It's like an inn with a private room and a bath, but since it's a lodging, dinner and breakfast are ``shojin ryori.'' However, the amount of ``Shojin Ryori'' was very good, and the seasoning was very good. In addition, we also had a ``prayer'' in the morning. It was nice to see that the room was clean as well. Overall, the lodging was like an inn, in a good way. It is recommended. By the way, this "Daishinbo" is said to be a shukubo with a history of about 300 years. They also accept tourists from overseas, and when I stayed there, there was a European family visiting. Well, anyhow, it was a wonderful "shukubo".
