Wonderful guest house, full of interesting artefacts and traditional Japanese trinkets.
Traditional stay with modern amenities.
Our family of 4 loved our stay here during April 2024. The owners are very welcoming into their home and they go to a lot of effort to make our stay happy and comfortable.
A traditional Japanese Breakfast meal is provided. The food is delicious and plentiful.
Sleeping is Japanese style on tatami mats and comfortable futon mattresses. The rooms and beds are warm and cosy, even when it is cold outside.
The bathrooms are clean and modern, and the hot bath was a very welcome relief from the days of walking.
The location is very convenient with a 1 minute walk to the Miyagawa morning markets and other interesting locations. The house is an easy 15 minute walk to Takayama station.
Highly recommend. We loved our stay here!

Herzliche Gastfreundschaft, super leckeres Essen, ruhige Lage, trotzdem zentral gelegen und gleichzeitig in einem traditionellen japanischen Haus übernachten - einfach grossartig! Wir haben uns sehr wohl gefühlt - vielen Dank nochmals an die Gastgeber.

Sumiyoshi es mi ryokan favorito en Japón. Lo regenta una pareja mayor absolutamente adorable. El ryokan permite tener una experiencia 100% japonesa con una atención cercana y cálida. La ubicación es perfecta, en un rincón tranquilo muy cerca de los mercados matutinos y de la famosa casa Yoshijima, uno de mis lugares favoritos en Takayama. No puedo recomendar este lugar lo suficiente para hacerle justicia.

I loved this ryokan, it was a home away from home. The workers at the ryokan treated you like family and are very hard workers. Always smiling and made you feel like home. The food was amazing, you will never go hungry. The location is in a fantastic spot, close to everything. Will be returning hopefully soon!

This is an exceptional Ryokan run by one of the most welcoming and gracious family -- genuinely extraordinary service, generosity and charming. A beautiful and convenient location, and just a wonderful experience. The Onsen is really a cherry on top. Highly recommended!

La experiencia en este ryokan ha sido bastabte agradable! Los anfitriones son personas mayores muy simpaticos y sonrientes en todo momento. Te atienden muy bien, están atentos a que te sientes cómodo, la cena y el desayuno simplemente delicioso y todo muy limpio. Los baños onsen a pesar de ser compartidos estaban muy limpios y tienen horarios. Todo estaba casi perfecto hasta que el momento de hacer el check out nos cobraron por el sake que tomamos en la cena cuando en realidad nunca nos dijeron que había un costo extra por ello, lo cual eso nos decepcionó un poco, ya que el precio fue algo caro, por eso les colocó 4 estrellas. Hubiesen logrado puntaje perfecto si nos hubieses informado del costl extra del sake. Por lo demás, todo muy bien! Es un ryokan bastante tradicional ñara experimentar la vida japonesa.

If you want to gain an insight into Japanese life, people and their traditions this is a lovely place to stay. It is a ryokan run by some elderly local people in a very old Japanese house. It’s such a change from standard hotels and we’re so glad we experienced a little bit of Japanese home life. We had a wonderful elderly lady who seemed to run the place and who we nicknamed “mama Takayama” as she looked after us so well. The staff don’t speak alot of English but are very warm and attentive. You sleep on the floor - and during the day the bedding is magically put away and you gain a tearoom! The breakfast is very good (you can opt for traditional Japanese which we had or Western style) and there’s an onsen which was a real bonus on freezing winter days. Excellent location - walking distance to everything. A lovely place to stay 2-3 nights.
