Thorpeness Golf Club and Hotel

Super golf break enjoyed by myself a three friends. Lovely course (try to avoid the gorse and numerous bunkers!) on which we enjoyed two rounds. Pleasant bar, comfortable rooms and good food served in the restaurant. Staff throughout were very affable and provided an extremely good service. We’d heard good reports from other golfers before booking and our experience supports those views. Look forward to returning.

An extremely good venue for a short golfing break. The golf course is challenging especially if it is windy. Service at the hotel is very excellent and I found all the staff were friendly and helpful. Food was also very good. Difficult to fault

We are now somewhat ancient and thus have visited Thorpeness regularly since the 1960's. It has in that time changed very little in terms of what the village offers. However, our one great delight is to be able to find a night or two at the CC. Whilst we are not golfers, we always delight in staying over in this wonderful atmospheric building with its wonderful views over the golf course and Meare. The bedrooms are offered in 3 different blocks, each providing a uniqueness and comfort. But our greatest pleasure is to dine in Ogelvie's Restaurant, where Chef David from the French Alps. provided meals to die for. We are never disappointed as his team "tweak" their recipes, both to show their skills but also to provide variety. Thus, for example the "lamb" dish is never the same twice! The 3-course dinner is of tremendous value and outstanding quality. It has no peers anywhere on the Suffolk coast. Chef David’s menu is brilliantly constructed to fulfil the needs of golfer and visitor. We are never disappointed and the wine list provides simple and good value wines. The bar and lounge provide ambience and there is an outside terrace overlooking the Meare. Adnams ales and largers are of course available to those that enjoy local beer. The staff are warm and friendly, and in many respects reflect a family hotel rather than a group. All are local and Paul, the night porter is a bonus lacking in so many Hotels and Pubs these days. The country club is a jewel in east Suffolk’s Crown which in many ways we are loathe to tell others in case we might make it popular.

I am not sure how this hotel got the standard for reviews it has so thought I must put the record straight. If you are a male golfer on a stag do this is truly the hotel for you. Seriously the swearing and beer drinking before 10am is the place to be assuming you are trying to connect with your cave man previous existence. On the plus side the breakfast was fantastic great food cooked to order with lovely friendly staff. But we had a problem with no hot water no one to tell on our first night so boiled the kettle. Then in the morning told to use the communal golf facilities. Btw we booked an ensuite room! Kerry or Kelly said this was unforseen problem that the boiler was leaking when she checked it out. My husband informed me that if this happened at home we have the back up of an immersion. I asked how many rooms were affected she said 8 I then asked how many showers were available for ladies she said 2 or 3. Plus side room was clean but very basic television was tiny so if you want to watch it bring a magnifying glass we were only interested in the news. On the plus side close to a number of lovely walks and Thorpeness village very pretty.

54 of us stayed for one night and two rounds of golf. Our room was clean and well presented albeit the shower didn't have much pressure. Plug sockets with USB ports would be a useful (and cheap) upgrade. The food at dinner was excellent as was the service. The bar service was also very good. The golf course is a tough challenge and a good design. The bunkers need some serious work though, very poorly maintained. Overall, good value for money.

Great place to stay, the location of the hotel was great. Quiet to sleep / relax, yet close enough to walk into the village. Golf course was a good test for the average golfer, it was playing short as burnt by the lack of rain. None the less an interesting course and well kept. Hotel: catering and bar facilities were just right for us - to stay a few nights. A change of menu would be expected had we stayed an extra night (3rd or 4th). Beer selection was good. Loved the history and variety of rooms you could relax in. Rooms were a good size and comfortable, nice large beds. Staff without exception were great - obviously well trained. Only negative comment would be everything is looking tired, so a fresh coat of paint and it would have scored 5 stars.

Could do with face lift as in rooms but club house , food and course is good , overall great but few small issues. Why is there black compact sand in some bunkers and soft building sand in others ,, the greens are great. Layout great ,, Food and staff and bar staff lovely. Had a problem with bathroom door handle falling off. The shower head falls off as well , One of our group was ill after first night and three others have been ill since getting back from two night stay. Overall lovely place

Went to bar area for lunch Found a table that was stable and clean! As most were sticky and wobbly! The chairs were badly stained so should have left then… Ordered a sandwich on focaccia When arrived the filling was cold instead of hot and the bread was cut like a cake instead of being sliced was so hard it was inedible The young man who served us helpful Could be so much better Needs updating and a good clean

Everything about this package was superb, apart from 1 thing, the older golfers. The room was lovely , the staff great, the service excellent and the food superb. The course is fantastic and was in great condition. I will definitely try again, but! Just a shame that there was no course marshall to deal with the 4 older members playin a 4BBB match, that spent 5 hrs hitting balls 150 yards into the gorse and then all going to look, leaving us, myself and my son (and I’m a senior) just stood waiting for ten minutes on every tee. They were 3 holes behind by the 14th. We gave up and skipped 2 holes in exasperation. Same the day before with 4 elderly guests. Please get a marshall to impose the rules, as displayed on the first tee!
