The location is fantastic. The car park was a bonus. A warm welcome and an upgrade (not at our request) to a very nice, spacious well-appointed room. Family were joining us for dinner. I found the eating areas very dark and uninspiring. The menu looked great but the food, despite all the talk about local provenance, was average. I’m not a fan of a plate overloaded with “fillers” such as chips and giant, greasy onion rings, and the béarnaise sauce (at extra cost) to accompany the steak was unpleasant. Wine prices were very high. The breakfast was mediocre. Eggs Benedict - a soggy muffin with rock hard poached eggs and unpalatable hollandaise sauce. On the positive side, all the waiting staff were extremely pleasant. The real problem came at checkout when we were presented with a bill that was incomprehensible. 3 glasses of wine at over £20 each! Several different people had to be called over to try to reconcile the charges including the fact that the £70 I had to prepay to reserve the table was not deducted from the bill. Thankfully I noticed. So, in all, a lovely room and a mediocre restaurant.
