Ryan Mansion

Great B and B The home is a trip into yesteryear. The decor fits the theme of early 1900's. Mary, our hostess was very accomodating. Her breakfasts we not only delicious, but filling (we did not eat lunch during our 4 day stay). Robert, the owner, took the time to have several lengthy chats about the mansion, its history (including several Royal visits) as well as stories of St. John and NFLD. Only draw back was getting our luggage up to the 2nd floor. As they say, location, location, location. We we able to walk everywhere except for Signal Hill and Quidi Vidi, which were both less than 10 minutes drive. A very memorable finish to our 15 days in NFLD.

The hotel appears to be set up to suit the owners rather than the guests. It was a baffling experience. There is apparently only one member of staff, Mary, an older woman who had to have a rest after climbing two flights of stairs to our room, and informed us that she was going to put on the clothes dryer in the utility room next to us so it would be a bit noisy for a while (it was 7pm at night, why not earlier in the day?). There appeared to be a bar but no one to serve, and no idea of whether it was an honesty bar or not. We were offered a choice of breakfast at either 8.30am or 9.30 am which was not ideal, and although we got downstairs at 8.32am, we had to wait 15 minutes before Mary arrived who informed us that she had been there at 8.30 exactly but then had to make breakfast for the guests who'd arrived on time!! The house itself is beautifully decorated, the bedrooms large and comfortable but there was no milk or sugar on the coffee tray (and no one around to request some). In short, it could be a perfect bolthole in the city, but we were certainly left feeling we were inconveniences rather than valued guests. The Mansion needs additional staff and help for Mary who appears to have to clean, cook and take care of the guests on her own.

Breakfast was absolutely amazing. The woodwork is stunning, very quiet area and near a lovely park. We woke up to a beautiful winter scene with snow covered trees all along the street and our car was even cleaned off, that was a very considerate thing to do. Enjoyed our stay.

Beautiful, historic property. Great hospitality. Would come back again:)
