We have stayed at the Gilpin Hotel and Spa 3 times over the past 3 years. The previous 2 stays were great, and service was impeccable. This time was different and we left dissatisfied, an not wanting to return. The service in general is extremely slow, and in some circumstances non-existent, whether this is down to lack of staff, or business as usual I'm unsure. It was extremely slow getting served in the bar, however, the drinks were well made. We ordered room service which did not arrive, so my wife had to re-order which was frustrating. Breakfast was extremely disappointing. On the first morning we had to wait five minutes to be shown to a table, then 20 minutes before being asked if wanted tea or coffee, then another 15 minutes for our breakfast order which came 30 minutes later, and was cold. I had to ask for another piece of black pudding as it was under cooked. The second morning was a similar experience, however, we received a hot breakfast which was nice. We found the food in Gilpin Spice very average, we we did not expect having eaten there before. We only enjoyed 2 dishes, the Asian Chicken, and the Banana Mousse desert. the rest was below what I'd expect for the prices you pay. I have to say that the majority of staff were lovely, and very apologetic when we complained, or reminded them of an order. We're not sure whether this is a hangover from Covid, or whether standards have dropped, however, when you're paying the best part of £2000 for a 2 night stay we expect a lot more. The Gilpin's competition, The Linthwaite Hotel, and Langdale Chase for outclass and are better value for money at this point.
