The hotel room is very small, unlike domestic hotels, and the price/performance ratio is very poor. The two white female front desk staff are racist. The room seems to be monitored. As long as a third person appears in the room during the day, we will soon be called to ask us to ask the third person to exit. Room!

It's just a better B&B, but to be honest I can't appreciate it. There is one room in one building, and the restaurant is downstairs.

It's a Relais & Châteaux hotel, but this was the only room available when I made the reservation. I didn't expect it to be so small. If you can afford it, book a larger one. It's comfortable to stay in and there's a Michelin restaurant downstairs.

What can I say about this place, it is outstanding and all the staff are amazing. Rooms are spacious and well maintained ( we had a junior suite). Meal in both restaurants are out of this world , can see why they have Michelin stars. We had a Spa day and would really recommend this as the treatments are the best we have had. Staff again are fantastic and really make you feel at home. I had an accident while staying and the staff could help enough. We can’t wait to return.

Wonderful stay , last minute , could only book one night as full ( late booking meant we could not enjoy some facilities. Positives superb quiet location . Main hotel very cosy quite traditional but with some contemporary items it did not feel at all dated Spice food was top notch ! Breakfast too Service was professional in all areas. Bathroom very large lots of very hot water , be careful! Great toiletries . Bed large and comfy. Hot tub was welcome . Negatives Could not get any treatments , or use the spa as full. I’m on chemo everything we do is last minute . There was no available slots in spice but Rob did manage to accommodate that for a 6 pm table which suited us . Did not think a guest would have a problem with dining reservations hot tub water was a bit scummy brown. We stayed in 15 cat bells Recommendations Book ahead if you want to use spa etc same for dinner Design issues His n hers sinks would be nice there was loads of room Mirror over dressing table hung by a bloke . Could not even see my head . Soft close toilet seat ? These are just minor things Overall a very short not long enough stay would have booked 2 nights ideally. We went to see the lakeside site. That was stunning . If you could eat there I would try that next time. I would recommend. We were blessed with the weather always helps ! Enjoy .

Spent 2 nights in a Garden suite to celebrate my wife’s 60th Birthday. Disappointed with the following: The room was not of 5 star quality by any means and was being charged £585 per night. It was tired , not properly cleaned , carpet stained, dust on the skirting boards, bathroom light in mirror not working , paintwork marked and chipped, furniture all marked and worn, bathroom tired and worn and this is 5* ? . This room we stayed in was called St Sunday Cragg. The room next door called the Sargent Mann was in total contrast having been refurbished and this was the type of room we were expecting! So not a great experience and certainly not of 5 stars! Our other issue was the Source Restaurant where we had booked for the Origin menu. The last dish we sent back as it was barely warm. The replacement was not much better. The pork dish came with a nice piece of trimmed fat. Why would anyone want fat on their plate? Beyond me. Our plates were removed, and we let it be known that we didn’t enjoy the last dish. We had desert but for some reason the petit fours never even arrived! And to add insult to injury the table was never cleaned and we sat amongst a load of crumbs! We brought our issue to Front of House and he discounted the wine and the last main dish from our bill. Also sent a bottle of champagne to our room. Our other issue was the table was never cleaned after each course and sat there with crumbs on the table after the main dish was removed for over 10 minutes. Our wine was poured only once! Whilst Front of house was apologetic and tried to rectify we would have preferred to have enjoyed the whole dining experience without issue especially as it was a very special occasion. We are also at a loss as to why the petit fours didn’t arrive. So our first night was not what we expected and had paid for. We did complain to reception straight away and followed up with the Manager the following day. We did ask if all the Garden suites were the same price to which the Manager confirmed they were, so we asked why our room which was well below standard for a 5 star hotel was the same price as the room next door to which the reply was that room has been refurbished. So if that’s the case why are Gilpin still advertising and charging the room at the same price as a newly refurbished room? Had we not said anything we would still be paying the same price! We can’t comment on the other rooms or the Spa lodges. On the second night we ate at the Spice. Food was good and we enjoyed it much more compared to the Source. The Front of house looked after us giving us a complimentary starter. But as the evening wore on became less attentive. Had to open and pour our own wine. Granted he couldn’t do so at the beginning as we still had another drink to finish. But it was never addressed after then. Our other issue was after finishing our meal we were asked if we wanted to look at the dessert menu to which we replied Yes. We waited… and waited … and wa

We had a great time at Gilpin, but were a bit let down/surprised by some of the service we received during our stay. The service was a bit hit and miss, and some of the waiting staff were amazing but some were a bit rude/passive aggressive, not what you’d expect at all! The rooms were a bit smaller than we expected (we stayed in a master room) but it was cute and cosy and worked well. The restaurants were both amazing, the Michelin star restaurant was as good as you’d expect but it was a bit strange dining in the same area you at breakfast. Gilpin Spice was really great too, with more exotic food! A few shout outs, Jackson and Martin/Martyn were great! Jackson was very nice and attentive and it was a pleasure to watch him working, he kept us entertained at the chefs table (would be interesting to see him working in the Michelin restaurant). Martin/Martyn (can’t remember how to spell his name) was great too, super helpful, patient and informative. Possibly a place we’d come back to!

We've just returned from a 2 night stay in a Spa Lodge at the Gilpin and we left feeling a bit underwhelmed, there were no major problems but just too many issues for somewhere of a five star rating and at this price. Our lodge had a problem with flies, the hotel were obviously aware of this as there was a can of bug spray and an insect zapper light in our room. I appreciate there might not be a huge amount they can do but having to continually swat flies for 2 days wasn't great. The lodge was boiling hot, even with the fire turned off, there was a ceiling fan which made no difference and when I asked how to cool the temperature, I was told to just open the doors, so it was either boiling hot or freezing cold, there was no in between. The sauna in our lodge was pretty much useless, even after leaving it on for over an hour, it was still too cold to sit in, the hot tub and steam shower were great though. They have speakers by the hot tub outside that you can link to your phone and play music, I really think this is a mistake as our first day was lovely and peaceful, however the second day was ruined by the guests in the lodge next door playing their music really loudly, we could even hear it over our TV and it completely ruined the calm and peaceful atmosphere which is what we went there for. We ate at Gilpin Source and were pretty disappointed, when we've eaten at restaurants with Michelin stars before, it's always been more of an event than a meal, with it typically taking anything from 3-4 hours, at Source we were finished within 90 minutes of sitting down, the food was obviously nice, however the portion sizes just weren't enough given it was only 6 courses (2 of which are cheese & petit fours), and the overall experience really missed the mark for us when compared with other Michelin starred restaurants. The check out time is 10.30am which I feel is way too early when considering the cost to stay and the size of the hotel, surely this could be pushed to 11am at least so you're not rushing to get packed & out the room on your last day. There were also a couple of other issues with drinks taking a long time to come etc, like I say, nothing too major, but too many issues given the 5 start rating and cost. I've rated the hotel at four stars but would probably have given three and a half if that was an option, given there's lots of other luxury hotels in the area, I'm not sure we'd go back.
