Sandman Inn Smithers

We've stayed at other Sandman locations and have generally had good experiences with clean, well-maintained properties and friendly service. Unfortunately, this particular location in Smithers didn’t quite live up to that standard. From the road, the building looks quite tired. Some fascia boards were coming loose, and the general exterior could really use some attention. It sets a tone before you even step inside, and unfortunately that first impression didn’t improve much. When we arrived around 5 p.m., the front desk wasn’t staffed, though there was a bell to ring for assistance. The signage made it a bit unclear whether staff were nearby or elsewhere in the building, so we waited for a bit before realizing we just needed to ring. A simple notice letting guests know help is close at hand would make a big difference in creating a more welcoming arrival. On the positive side, the bedding was clean and well-kept, and the shower had great water pressure. However, the carpet in our room looked like it had seen better days, and the air conditioner was very loud and made strange noises during the night. It worked—but not quietly. The hotel overall just feels like it's in need of care and investment. From propped-open fire doors that are clearly marked to remain closed, to a range of maintenance issues throughout, it gave the impression that upkeep is being overlooked. Staff we encountered weren’t rude, but they didn’t seem particularly engaged either. It was a noticeable contrast to the warm welcome we got just up the highway at the Houston tourism office. We don’t require accessibility features, but we couldn’t help noticing that the hotel would present serious challenges for anyone who does. While the building’s age may explain some of that, there’s little evidence of any updates or improvements being made in that area. All in all, this wasn’t a terrible stay—but it wasn’t a great one either. We’d hoped for more, based on other Sandman experiences. Next time we’re in Smithers, we’ll probably explore other options.
