Two friends and I had booked to stay at The Shipham Inn while walking the West Mendip Way. My friend had booked two rooms and dinner directly with the manager Graham by email, who had confirmed the booking, and yet when we arrived in the afternoon, weary and ready for a drink and a shower, the front door was locked and there was no answer by phone or by ringing the bell / knocking on the door. We were pretty baffled by this, and the general air of disrepair and mess (ashtrays overflowing with cigarettes and a dirty bowl and spoon just left on the tables outside the front door) which contrasted significantly from the signs claiming to give us a 'warm welcome'. Two visitors to the car park assured us that they would let the manager know we were there (it was apparently his day off) and said he would be back shortly. 45 minutes later we were still waiting when Graham and Cheryl arrived and spoke briefly to my friend - they indicated that they would make another room up but that was pretty much it, certainly no apology or expression of welcome. We waited outside (the front door was still locked) for another 30 minutes wondering what on earth was going on until I needed the loo - again no answer to the phone or from ringing the doorbell, at which point we gave up and headed to The Swan Inn in Rowberrow which was a compete different and wonderfully welcoming experience. My friends and I are still very confused as to why our experience was so different to the reviews here and on other sites - perhaps the hosts didn't want their day off interrupted and hoped we would go of our own accord, in which case why did they accept a booking on a Wednesday? In any case, I would definitely NOT recommend this venue based on our experience.

Called in to the Penscot for lunch with friends just for the sake of trying somewhere different. Not a modern Pub and some would say in need of refurbishment, But the Butcombe beer was lovely and the rose wine was good too. Now the food is the highlight top quality fish for the fish and chips cooked to perfection and proper mushy peas. We also had cottage pie and american chicken burger again very nice, even skinny chips were served for one of our party on request. Its a limited menu, but with the cost of things nowadays who can blame them what they do is very very good indeed We will certainly go again. good value good service and nice people. Nice old Pup.

Friendly staff, excellent food, perfect setting on the Green. We wanted to eat outside and were served there which worked well as one of our group is disabled. Steps outside not too much of a problem as we were offered assistance.

What a fantastic place, with outstanding hosts! I visited recently with my pet cat to attend the animal hospital close by. Stayed two nights. Cheryl and Graham went above and beyond for me and snowy. Little presents with food on the bed when we arrived, how thoughtful! The breakfast was absolutely stunning, fresh produce cooked to perfection. The room was adequate for our needs, and very comfortable. Quiz night was good fun too. But overall, it’s the welcoming, natural and superbly friendly and funny hosts who are the stars of this establishment. Cheryl and Graham, I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your kindness, and made a challenging experience much better for me and snowy. God bless you both. Wayne and Snowy

I was looking forward to revisiting the Penscott Inn with my wife since hearing it had reopened under new management. It has improved which was easy to achieve as the previous poor reviews really said it all. Dirty, grubby and unkempt. There is no excuse for being given a wine glass with greasy fingerprints and lipstick around the rim left by the previous user. The new couple are young, helpful and polite. The bar area so much cleaner and outside clutter , cigarette ends and rubbish cleared away. However there were two aspects that would not pursued us to hurry back. Firstly too many odd chairs and tables gave the impression of us being crammed in. When we decided to leave we had to plan a way off getting out. As the old saying goes … less in more . The other detraction was the effing and blinding of the men at the bar. The fact is that if the Inn gets a reputation as a workingmen’s after work pub then local residents and others will simply stay away . Including ourselves. The Penscot Inn is in a delightful setting and has got the potential to be a very good local pub . We truly hope this review helps to achieve it.

Just want to say what a fantastic weekend we had at the Prescott Inn meeting up with family which had not seen in 2yrs, wonderful host were Phil & Jo. nothing was to much trouble for myself and family. Food was superb Rooms were lovely and clean, entertainment was good especially with young children who were with us. Keep up the good work looking to do it again soon. Highly recommend if looking for a weekend away either with friend or on your own.

A beautiful village in a gorgeous village setting and from the outside a pleasant looking inn. Step inside and your confronted with dirty carpets, staff poorly presented and the pub dog at your feet. The ownership were helpful and polite but this didn't contra the general appearance of a poorly decorated public area and rooms. Clean linen and shower but generally everywhere in need of total refurbishment.

I stopped at the Penscot Inn as the first overnight stop backpacking the Mendip Way / Southern Coast To Coast. Received a warm welcome from the wonderful Andrews family, who were pleasant throughout, I didn't want for much - but that being said nothing was too much trouble. The burger in the evening was huge, as was the custom breakfast the next morning - perfect to get the calories up for the day ahead. The double room was basic and in keeping with the rustic nature of the Inn - but was again perfect for my needs with a functional, kettle, tea etc, had a decent shower and was warm, and peaceful which led to a good nights rest. Highly recommended for anybody doing the Mendip Way or who wants to explore this area without all the frills or costs of more upmarket options. The Penscot Inn was definitely a good find.
