This visit to Charlton house was a 15 year anniversary gift for my wife so no expense was spared for a luxury 1 night stay for us both. We arrived on time to have our 1 hour massage treatments which were really good. Unfortunately it went downhill from there, the light lunches we had were not what we ordered, which wasn’t a massive problem. But when we checked into our room an hour later we discovered there were no curtains on the two windows, one window overlooked the restaurant. Hugely overpriced cocktails in the afternoon followed by a mediocre, so say rosette 2 course meal, definitely don’t order the monkfish tail starter as you get the smallest half finger size piece of monkfish, main course’s were ok but both of us were still hungry afterwards so ordered the £15 cheese board which still wasn’t sufficient for what we had paid. Anyway, after paying £550 for a 1 night stay, I felt a little ripped off and am sure there’s plenty of better hotel/spa’s which will give you much better value.

Booked a one night D B &B with a spa treatment and spa access included. However, upon arrival we were advised that the swimming pool and Jacuzzi were cold as they had both suffered with technical issues. Apparently we'd been contacted at noon on a home phone, but as we were traveling, we had not been made aware. The young reception staff seemed to think that we would be happy with the offer of £20 per person compensation instead of being able to enjoy all the spa facilities, with a second option for a full refund and go elsewhere! Thankfully a more senior employee (the wedding planner) was able to intervene and offer a better amount of compensation with room upgrade which due to our very long car journey we accepted. However, the dining room is very uninspiring (as was the mediocre food) in comparison to the other well staged lounges, common areas and our bedroom suite which was vast. Upon reviewing the dinner bill we'd been overcharged by £13 for the wine, which we had to get refunded. At breakfast the sourdough toast was limp and soggy and English muffin uncooked/chewy and had to be sent back to the kitchen as inedible. Our room had no milk for tea/coffee which we only discovered after retiring. The spa treatments were good but overall the total experience disappointing and I won't be returning .

Shabby, grubby and in need of some love. Food a massive disappointment and overpriced. Potential to be stunning. Inedible breakfast and hugely disappointing dinner. Cardboard meringue, stale pastries, something that passed for a sausage. Curry could best be described as boiled chicken with a bit of spicy water.

An absolutely wonderful stay here this week. My husband and I were on a little mini honeymoon and drove two hours from North Devon and it was worth the journey. We originally had a beautiful room with a four poster bed, a stand alone bath and our own private little courtyard overlooking the main garden. Unfortunately the walk in shower was broken and filled the bathroom up with water so they moved us to a room with our own private garden and our own hot tub. I preferred the first room, we can’t have everything and sh*t happens. The girl on reception was fantastic at sorting our situation out and couldn’t have been lovelier. I can’t remember her name but she had long dark hair, was in her mid 20’s and very pretty. Breakfast was delicious and had an added element of excitement as we were joined by A-list actress Ruth Wilson. She was left alone to enjoy her coffee and oats and to read her book but it was nice to see an A-lister among us just chilling and not be bothered, albeit with a couple lingered glances and google searches to show their unaware husbands who they were dining with. The spa was awesome and so peaceful and not too busy. We can’t wait to come back. Maybe for a winter break….

The most beautiful stay for our first year wedding anniversary. Stunning room with private terrace and a bath tub with a perfect view. Highly recommend! We will be back! We didn’t use the spa but intend too next time. Staff really friendly and helpful. Thankyou for a great stay!

This review is after a spa day we booked with lunch. This review is only for the hotel as the spa in itself was fab. When you work in hospitality that is what you expect. Hospitable service. With a 'can do' attitude rather than the service here which was 'can't be bothered.' Upon entrance we were not very well welcomed. The service in the restaurant was non existent and the food was about edible. There were multiple staff but overall they all were lacking and it was shocking when asking a question to the supervisors they didn't acknowledge us or reluctantly answered our questions. No effort at all.

We arrived only to find the junior suite we had booked was not available…we were first offered a suite near reception , but shower was over a jacuzzi which l could not step over …so we were then offered the only room left the wooden garden lodge. When we went inside it was not only dark and dismal but damp…thee w as a discarded waste pipe the hand basin. The guest relations manager apologised for everything and offered us free dinner which then turned out to be a glass of champagne for my wife once he found out we had dinner included. We had to put on the heating in the unwelcoming garden lodge to try and get some warmth in the building and the dampness off. We couldn’t sit outside as the table had moss growing over it and the plant next to the door was dead..it was such a sorrowful sight! We kept asking ourselves what on Earth we were doing in such a dreadful place. The patio was dirty and uncared for and the general look of the look f the hotel was tired and uncared for. Dinner in the conservatory was fine and the staff friendly enough. When we cam to check out we were charged the full amount for a junior suite…outrageous! When l complained l was just told to write in to the general manager. Overall a terrible experience .

I purchased an afternoon tea voucher for my parents as a Christmas gift. On arrival, they were left waiting a long time before a young man spoke to them. My Mum said they had a booking for afternoon tea and showed him the voucher and the man said to her ‘I have never seen one of these before in my life’. He then said he would have to speak to the chef. He came back and said to my Mum ‘ok the chef will do it but we’re not doing if for anyone else’ After these ludicrous comments, my parents were then seated to ‘enjoy’ their afternoon tea. The service wasn’t great, they didn’t feel very looked after and ordering a pot of tea seemed to be a big ask. My parents came to Charlton House that day looking forward to a lovely afternoon tea in nice surroundings with friendly service. What they got was quite different. They felt like a complete inconvenience to the staff who were not attentive in any way. We are local to the area and have enjoyed many nice events at Charlton House over the years and quite frankly i’m disgusted and disappointed that my parents were treated this way.

Great spa. £30 pp though! Not sure about that,? 😕 Great staff (with exception of the odd Muppet!) Breakfast was great, but dinner! Oh no! The starter for example... Monkfish tail was it? More like two "pinky" sized pieces in a sea of bottled sauces that was more like rubber than soft poached fish! Just awful.! 😱😡 Steak that was mediocre quality. The soup was ok, plenty of it, but lacked depth, and the the Belly Pork!!!! Omg, 3 inch of pure white jellied fat! Gross! No no no. I think that we enjoyed half of the experience but the conservatory cafe-style "restaurant" is the joke, the deal breaker. Our advice.... Great hotel for b&b and spa (consider the £60 extra), 🤔 but look elsewhere for or dinner, in our opinion. Because of that, we wouldn't ever return sadly. The management needs to decide the objective to this hotel. Where is your market?
