We visited the Cross Scythes last night for a preview prior to opening following change of ownership and what a fantastic refurbishment very cozy and inviting. The food was excellent the Yorkshire Fish cake was delicious and the Sea Bass and pasta a lovely new twist. Bek, Mollie and all the team were as always brilliant so have no doubt that this will be a new jewel in the local area and certainly one to visit. We can highly recommend.

One star is too high. Absolute disaster of a Christmas Day. Pre ordered yet they ran out of stock for all courses. And we pre paid! Regretting that massively… Took 30 minutes to be sat down. An hour to get some awful looking appetisers. No welcome Prosecco, tables filthy, ran out of drinks. We had to drink wine in half pint glasses as they had no clean wine glasses. Shocking quality of food, can tell they literally ran to a corner shop for ingredients. Took two hours to get any food. We left after the mains, where we got no Yorkshire puddings or roast potatoes. The poor staff looked traumatised, and were crying. Stonegate should hang their heads in shame. The worst Christmas Day we’ve ever had. The owners knew what they were doing… they ran stock low as they knew they were going, took our money and left their poor staff to pick up the pieces. Scumbags.

Went here today for a meal with friends. The food and service was awful. Myself and one of my friends were served fish and chips. The fish was a joke, there was no fish, just hard batter which almost broke our teeth. We complained and wasn't charged for the meal which was a good job as no way would I pay £15.00 for hard batter! Another two friends were served onion rings that were burnt and hard. We were also ignored once we had been served our main course. No one bothered to come and ask if we wanted a drink or a dessert. My advice is to avoid this place if you want a decent meal. I had to eat again when I went into the city centre as I was still hungry.

A warm welcome and the room was fine, although only one bedside lamp. The balcony was a useful addition. The shower room desperately needed a decent deep clean…..a couple of bottles of bleach would have been a start. Breakfast was pretty grim. Some cereals, and packets of biscuits. Plenty of juice. The cooked breakfasts we had were poor quality (some bits warm, some bits cold, some bits cooked properly, some not)……got the impression the breakfasts are “cooked” by someone who can’t actually cook. My husband described his two breakfasts as “horrible” and the “worst breakfasts ever”. We had one evening meal here. It was ok. Wouldn’t choose to return.

Positives: situated in lovely location, if chosing not to drive there is a bus stop outside and £2 fare to Sheffield, nice sized balcony with table and two chairs, some nice walks nearby, room spotless, large tv, lovely comfy bed. Desserts at dinner were excellent and a good choice. Friendly staff especially at breakfast lovely well kept grounds plenty of comfortable seating spaces inside Can have choice of coffee for breakfast for no extra cost - such as a mug of latte which I love. Negatives: rather steep step down from bedroom to balcony and suggest a sign sign to say "watch your step". The glass base of a bedside lamp was broken, looked like someone had tried to "superglue" a bit and had fallen off and thankfully I spotted it in time and asked a member of staff who removed it and apologised. WC is a macerator and when flushed makes a loud groaning noise and heard when used by residents in other 3 rooms. Not really a bother in itself but the smell really pungent. Breakfast apart from poached eggs is obviously pre cooked and re heated which makes items such as hard streaky bacon. This was similar to goujons for dinner which were hard, dry, no taste. Cereal consisted of choice of 3 different ones from variety packs. No fruit or yogurt Previously had lovely evening meals here with family which influenced my choice to stay for 2 nights.

Visited and stayed for 2 nights to visit our daughter who has just moved in to a flat nearby. Very easy check in and our room was very pleasant with the most amazingly comfy bed and pillows. The pub/hotel is situated near to Bakewell where we had a lovely day out. Our breakfast was lovely on both mornings with perfectly cooked poached eggs! If I had one gripe, it would be that the shower cubicle could do with some attention to detail with cleaning. We will definitely return as all staff were very friendly and accommodating. Thank-you very much.
