For a wedding in Glenbulah, my husband and I stayed one night at The Oasis Hotel & Bar. We chose it mainly b/c all of the hotels and B&B's near the wedding were already booked or insanely expensive. This turned out to be a very good thing ... I do road trips between Chicago and Florida 6-8 times per year. I generally stay in Hilton properties b/c that's where I get points. So, I can say confidently that this little hotel got *everything* right. The super-nice lady at the front desk let me know that the hotel had just been renovated, with more improvements to come. When we got to the room (#215) the first thing I noticed was how clean--really clean--everything was. Freshly painted walls and ceiling, brand new clean carpet in the bed area, clean and up-to-date sink/toilet/shower area, no weird spots on the ceiling, no hair in the sink, no slow/gurgling drains, no holes in the walls, no wobbly furniture or doors that don't close properly, no spots on the sheets. The window A/C and heat worked with no issues, the lamps and television worked with no issues. These are BASICS that every hotel or motel should keep up with, but many do not. Even many Hilton properties. The next surprise were the two queen-sized beds that had four pillows each. New memory foam/innerspring mattresses atop a metal platform that didn't move, squeak, shift or sag. Again, this is simple stuff that many hotels don't get right. There was also a mini-fridge and a microwave we did not use. This is not a luxury hotel. Far from it. This is what every hotel/motel used to be like back in the day. Clean room, simple layout, nothing fancy (i.e. no quartz countertops, etc). But it hit the mark in every way that matters. And it was affordable. The breakfast in the lobby was the only thing that was lacking. The hot items, eggs and sausages, looked OK, and there were some bagels and a make-your-own pancake machine. Missing was fresh fruit, cereal, milk, and yogurt. So, I went with a cup of coffee, which was fine, but there were no lids for the to-go coffee cups, so I had to drink half a cup and toss it before we got in the car. Overall, this place was a big win. We'll be back if we're in the area.
