I stayed here for 2 nights on business recently. Admittedly this is my first visit to The Gambia but if you are used to European hotels then this place will come as a shock. The grounds were well tended but everything else appeared to have had little maintenance for at least a decade and looked tired, rusty, shabby and in need of a lick of paint. Perhaps this is why there are very few guests. The room and sheets were clean and the aircon worked. However hot water took 5 mins to arrive in a very dated bathroom and the internet is basically unusable. Breakfast is included but very basic. Drinks OK but very expensive. There is a 5m ***** of sand outside the hotel but no beach as such, it has been replaced by a wall of boulders presumably to stop erosion. Thankfully I was not paying the bill myself but there must be better alternatives than this!

It was better than I imagined. I felt a welcome atmosphere from many staff. In front of the sea, there was Security near the beach chair so I was able to spend a relaxing time with peace of mind. It was a pity that the shower in the room was only cold water. The washbasin had hot water ...

This was our first time in Gambia and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The Kombo Beach Resort is undergoing refurbishment with one new block due to be completed in a few months though you could not hear any noise. We were in Block A which I believe was done last year. Everything was new and in good working order but the quality of the finishing could definitely have been better. As per many of the other reviews, the staff are all very friendly and eager to help. A special thanks to the bar and restaurant staff but especially Terema for her attentive service. As vegetarians there was plenty of choice for breakfast with one Indian speciality each morning. The choices in the evening were quite limited for us on some days but the chefs Shankar and Bhagwan prepared something for us every day. At one lunch, Bhagwan was making Momos but these were all non veg. The next day, he specifically made vegetarian ones for us. Shankar even made us Aloo Paratha for breakfast on the day we left and packed some for the flight back. This definitely made us feel special and are so grateful to them. As vegetarians it would be more helpful if the labelling of the food was better with maybe a green V sticker to indicate what is suitable for vegetarians. The hotel is in a great location right on the beach and the weather at this time of year is perfect. It's very pleasant most of the time but can get hot between midday and 4pm but thankfully hardly any mosquitos! Thank you to Victor and his team for a lovely relaxing time at the hotel.

Overall I rate this hotel as 4 stars. Having said that we did have a few issues. Someone previous referred to this hotel as Fawlty Towers. For the first few days of our 18 nights stay I could see where he was coming from. Problems first. On arrival at the airport we expected to be greeted by the taxi arranged through the hotel. It was not there. After many phone calls our ride arrived. If we went again I would not bother with 30 euro taxi ride and would take a local taxi at about £20 at silly o'clock. When we arrived at the hotel a man spoke to us and claimed he was the taxi driver due to pick us up, he was on time but we told him to go away. Complete nonsense. We didn't tell anyone to go away. Even as a first timer I could tell the Gambians apart. He was definitely not there. I refused his card. No way would I use him. Our first room was large and comfortable but the safe didn't work. The next morning someone came to show me how it operated and agreed it was broken. We were immediately moved to a new room. The new room was large and comfortable but the toilet wouldn't flush overnight. Not normally too much of a problem but my husband was very ill with v&d due to fish allergy. Being ill and the toilet not flushing all night was very bad. They said they would fix it. We went away on an overnight trip and when we returned I was ill - nothing to do with the hotel. The toilet didn't work. My husband ran up and down the stairs a few times. The night man would flick a switch in a cupboard somewhere and the sewage pump would work again for an hour or so. We moved rooms again the next day as we refused to be fobbed off and they said no other rooms had that issue. We had toilet flushing issues again but this time the issue was fixed quickly. WiFi in the third room didn't work unless I stood outside our door. Plus points: The staff were lovely and helpful. Malick, our room attendant, was very kind and caring. He arranged for a fridge that actually got cold as the one in the 3rd room got cool only. The bed was very large and comfortable. High quality sheets and towels were a bonus. His and her sinks were good. Shower was good. Sprayed in various directions with easy to use controls. TV in room showed British football - big plus. Air con worked well. WiFi worked well in parts of the hotel. They had frequent conferences and seemed to move routers to suit the business people. Once we learned where we could get the best signal we could easily Skype call back to the UK. Sunbeds were very comfortable and plentiful. Actually we usually got a good WiFi signal by the pool. Pool looked clean and was used frequently by Europeans (albeit cold). Breakfast was good. Supposed to start at 7.30am but this only worked if we stood there and told them what we wanted. Positives 1.Excellent location 2.Pools, rooms & garden immaculate 3. Extremely relaxing & peaceful 4. Fabulous choice for breakfast 5. Visible presence of hotel manager 6. Laminate BK Fofana our cleaner was amazing by constantly asking if we needed anything, kept our room spotless & was the only one who made our anniversary extra special with his beautiful decorations on our bed & the fuss/ motivation he created with his colleagues too 7. Our favourite hotel in Gambia & will definitely return (despite the below areas for development) Areas for Improvement 1. Same A la carte menu provided at the bar for lunch as per the evening. Discovered can have sandwiches, pizza, burgers etc.. for lunch as well, but not advertised anywhere. Then on another day this wasn't available 2. Given one time for breakfast, then suddenly changed another day. Both food times & entertainment should be advertised in each room 3. Signage around the hotel confusing or non existent e.g toilets near the bar 4. Can wait upto half an hour for a drink at the bar 5. Sent 2 emails prior to arrival for our anniversary & we ordered a bottle of champagne with one of restaurant managers face to face the day before, but we didn't receive anything 6. Confusing as to whether evening meal was going to be buffet or A la carte 7. Drinks rarely offered on the private beach part 8. Excellent massage for a reasonable price at the spa, but when asked for Hair appointment, they only do this in Serekunda which you have to get a taxi to

We had an amazing stay in Gambia. The Hotel is modern and novel, but still with lots of african art ornaments decorated. It was very clean everywhere! We felt very comfortable in our apartment. We missed nothing. We were amazed about the attentive and friendly staff and also about the service at beach. We enjoyed especially the african music in the evening which played two times a week. Not far from the hotel are shops where can buy the local products. In Serekunda are nice bars and clubs which is reachable by taxi in a few minutes. It's possible to book trips in the hotel. We did the Senegal Safari and the makasutu forest tour which was very nice. I went also to Banjul which was very nice and authentic. We highly recommend this Hotel and would love to come back again. We stayed at this resort as a group of nine, and very Apartments and the Nian Villa. The resort itself is a treasure. Its location is fantastic as it is very close the ***** and restaurants and bars. . The apartment suited couples and single travellers . The staff are friendly and welcoming although we felt the site manager was a little dismissive to some of our enquiries . We booked direct which saved us a little bit of money included free air-conditioning . The grounds are lovely in some areas, although some work is required around the Nian Villa . The Philip was a beautiful Hideaway, which suited a couple and two single travellers. It also accommodated the rest of our party when they came over for drinks et cetera . We all agree that we would definitely return
