If you are interested in going back in time by staying at a well-maintained Victorian house from 1877, you might consider the Gables Wine Country Inn in Santa Rosa. The rooms are spacious with antique period furnishings. The owners serve a delicious three course breakfast. However, if you get a room in the front of the inn, expect a lot of noise from passing traffic, as it is located on a busy country road where vehicles tend to speed by. A white noise machine is provided to try to offset the noise level, After a while, the noise doesn’t seem as bothersome as much, perhaps as you get more accustomed or desensitized to it. Befitting an older inn, there is no television in the room, but WiFi is provided. Each room has its own bathroom with a claw foot tub. A shower head was added as a modern convenience, but be advised that the bathtub plumbing in this period house is antiquated with the spigots located very low in the bathtub and hard to reach to adjust water temperature. We learned to use our feet to turn the spigots. Moreover, if you are older or have physical challenges, it may be hard to climb into the high wall tub, and the shower space is extremely cramped and actually claustrophobic. Breakfast, while delectable, is served only at 9AM usually in the dining room at the sound of a gong. Here you are seated at long tables with other guests. Depending on your preference, this arrangement may seem regimented. One morning, however, as there were only four guests, we enjoyed a delightful breakfast al fresco on the deck. This may have been an exception. The inn is on four acres of land with a deck, vineyard, and cottage to rent. Most visitors come to visit wineries for wine tasting.
