Hotel Finca Playa Venecia

Through winding and bumpy roads, we finally made it to Hotel Finca Venecia after a smooth ferry ride. Ometepe Island is the largest island in Lake Nicaragua and is known for its two volcanoes – Volcán Maderas and the active Volcán Concepción. We had a lake view room which had a lovely breeze through the windows at night. If you wanted air conditioning it would cost an extra $15 USA per night. Our ground floor room had deck chairs at the front for us to view the lake. We entered are room to find the air conditioning remote on the wall but decided as we hadn’t paid for it, we wouldn’t use it. The room is a good size but the lights and power kept coming off and on. No internet in the room either. The fan worked but then it didn’t. It was connected to the light switch so you had to have lights on for the fan to be on. Eventually, the whole thing stopped working and we were just grateful for the breeze off the lake. The dining area was the hub of the hotel, where we would dine, have meetings and catch up on emails because it was the only place the internet worked. Power outages were regular which meant no lights (dangerous at night walking along paths). Also meant kitchen had limited abilities and again, no wifi. A massive storm came through which was quite spectacular. Plenty to do here: walk around butterfly park, kayaking, go to the chocolate factory and visit the thousands of petroglyphs and stone idols that date back as far as 300 BCE, remnants of the original inhabitants of the island. As such, it is also one of the most important rock art areas in the world.
