Barceló Cabo de Gata

This hotel is definitely not 4*. It may have been 20 years ago but it is now very tired. Good points - beds were comfy, shower was hot, air-con worked well. Plenty of sun loungers. Bad points - we booked a superior room (this overlooked a car park - which had some dubious vehicles arriving in the early hours!) the sea was in the distance. The rooms were cleaned every day, but not to a particularly good standard. Same marks round wash basin for 12 days etc. When leaving the shower, the water leaked onto the floor which has rotted the bottom of the bath panel and the door frame. The food was the worst part of our stay. Always luke warm, weird combinations of food, gristly meat, not even an omelette station at breakfast! We went out to eat for the last 2 evenings as could not face the hotel restaurant again. It isn't made clear when you book AI that you have to pay for snacks either. There is only one bar in the evening. The staff are excellent. Reception helped us on a couple of occasions when we had problems with our room, the bar staff - especially Antonio and a colleague were very friendly and good to have a joke with. Valentina who was on the desk in the restaurant, always had a smile and greeted us cheerfully at every meal time and took time to speak to us. We had high expectations of a Barcelo Hotel but feel very disappointed. We will be coming back to the area a lot over the next year, but will not be staying here and would not recommend it.

As per every hotel you stay at the eye is in the beholder. The staff were exceptional nothing was too much trouble ever so helpful which makes my stay most enjoyable. This hotel is primarily Spanish so generally quieter than an English based hotel but obviously culturally different ie they don’t queue and just different manners etc but we are all different. There is not much near to the hotel so all inclusive is advised we like it quiet so was good for us. Food was great rooms good pools great

Nice hotel staff very helpful and friendly, some public areas needed to be kept cleaner ( Ladies Toilet Ground floor) our room had a great view and was comfortable. Not much in the way of local bars or restaurants, what was open was low on choices.

Lovely hotel, nice rooms, very clean. Staff helpful. Price of drink was very expensive. As an example, a run and coke was €11.

I have visited this Hotel 7 times in the last 5 years. I am hoping to return in May together with my bike. September/October stay I cycled 932 miles during my 4 week stay. Motorists are very courteous.

Nice hotel which had plenty of facilities on site. Reception staff were lovely upon arrival and throughout. Indeed my wife got taken ill during our staff and they organised a taxi to the hospital and couldn't do enough for us, regularly checking in on her until she was better. Rooms were lovely and spacious with a balcony and sea view and represented good value for money. Only thing that we were a little disappointed with was the quality and particularly lack of variety of food specifically at dinner (we went half board). Stayed at similar establishments and had a much better offering and selection Restaurant service left a little bit to be desired as on at least half the time during our stay it took around 15-20 minutes to get served drinks. We ended up having to go up to the waiters/waitresses to request drinks. First stay and expected a little more from a Barcelo hotel. Breakfast was a slightly better. Hotel is lovely if you want a nice week to chill out and there are excellent bus connections to Almeria City however where the hotel is based in El Toyo and is a little cut off from the rest of the coast to Almeria so with the exceptions of excursion or hiring a car then you are mainly based in El Toyo, which has quite a few restaurants and a couple of small supermarkets but not much else. Promenade was lovely and you are really located right next to the beach so ideal for a chilled week but if you want to explore then you will need to hire a car or book excursions with the likes of Jet2 as there are no local providers in the immediate vicinity. Hotel was immaculate, clean and the rooms were spacious and beds very comfy.
