Bed was comfy and staff friendly but we paid a lot (over $300) for a room and the hotel is not worth the money. It’s in a bit of rough part of town (even the local Thai restaurant closed at 8pm on a Sat night). We had a drink in pub opposite and they made us feel welcome though we didn’t stay out late due to uncertainty of the area. If the rate was lower and you needed somewhere to just rest your head then stay here.

This "Inn" is probably not in compliant with the ADA requirements. It does not have an elevator and most rooms require walking up a steep staircase.I do not know if there are any rooms on the first floor but getting almost everywhere requires stairs. Our room was large but faced the road. As a result, we heard car noises all night. It seems the rooms facing the back were smaller and probably less noisy.The breakfast was spare and seating was inadequate. It is not conveniently located to downtown. The only positive was the pleasant staff.

Do not stay here if you can avoid it. Sketchy part of town, limited parking. Front desk advised us to park on the street if the parking was full but information sheet given to us said cars may be towed at owner’s expense. Room was old and musty, bed uncomfortable and bathroom dated and minuscule. No elevator so you have to haul your bags up the steep stairs to your room. Worst part: this cost almost $500 a night.

We enjoyed our stay here a lot!! Very cute and well equipped rooms but they are on the smaller side. Very glad we were given 1st floor rooms as there are no elevators here. Breakfast, coffee, cookies, were very nice too. The bed was too hard though and the area isn’t close to the main area of Portland.

Very nice historic hotel. We stayed om the street side and there is some traffic noise, but it wasn't an issue for us. Breakfast was continental but definitely enough to eat and good variety. The bed was comfy; the room was huge, with a nice table and chairs by the bay window.

This was my fourth stay at St John and I will most certainly be staying here again on my next trip to Portland. Despite a ghost sitting on my bed, pulling at the sheets of the other bed, and the incessant tapping on the door, the hotel is just as lovely as always. The staff are wonderful, as always friendly and accommodating. The room was pristine, and we very much enjoyed breakfast in the parlour. Just be sure to take some good strong sleeping pills in room 7A.

This place is very charming at first glance. The people were friendly and helpful. We stayed only one night and for me happy to go. Once checked in we came face to face with the stairway to hell for us. No elevator just very steep narrow steps three stories up. Carrying our bags was a challenge that we took on. The room was very musty smelling and the icing on the cake was our bathroom was a shared bathroom. Bathroom in my trailer was bigger. Awkward!!!!! Not all rooms are like this but for the price they all should. The room did had a coffee maker…thank god. They did have a small continental breakfast as well. If you have trouble climbing stairs make sure you get the lower floors with bathrooms because you may have some trouble going up to even the second floor.

I was disappointed. It’s not easily accessible at all. There is no elevator, so if you are not on the first floor, be prepared to struggle up the stairs. It is such a tight fit up and down the stairs! It was awful getting luggage up and down. The staff at the front desk wasn’t great. Especially at check out. One girl was rude and snippy when I gave her my keys to the room. Overall, I don’t think I would stay again.
