Talbot House

We had a nice time at Talbot House. The big plus is the historic value of the place, as we visited the area to learn more about WWI. So amazing to be able to explore the house and talk to the volunteer working here. Other things we liked were the friendly service and breakfast. Also big plus we could bring our dog, staying in the garden house. With the cold whilst we were there, not having central heating was a bit of a struggle as the aircon is only on during the afternoon/evening and harder to set to a consistent temperature. Also the shared bathroom’s window couldn’t be closed, so absolutely freezing to go to. Last, our room was on the small side and felt a bit cramped especially with our dog. But overall good value for money.

When we booked this we did not realise that this place is actually a museum, Talbot House was a second home for the soldiers of WWI, acting as a place to escape the gruels of war. The staff is very friendly, besides a little dust the place is clean and well kept. It has a beautiful garden to relax in while you admire the work and plants. Breakfast has breads with a choice of sweet and salty toppings, many fruits, cereals, and a full array of drinks. The cat is an absolute cuddle-bug and very friendly, 10/10, would pet again. Can definitely recommend staying here, good price/quality ratio.

A wonderful and unique guesthouse! It's not often you can sleep a night at a museum! Thankfully none of the WW1 relics woke up like in the movie. This is a special English oasis in the Flanders fields, well worth a visit.

Stayed here for just one night as part of a tour of Flanders and The Somme. Good location. Free parking a 5 minute walk away. The air con worked a dream. Beds are comfortable. Quiet rooms. Shared toilet/bathroom between three rooms. Clean all over the hotel. Honesty bar for an evening beer. Good value for money. Hosts were very welcoming. Some rooms are in the garden and have air con. Those in the house itself do not. Would recommend.

We stayed here for one night and wish we had stayed longer. The staff are so friendly, the breakfast is lovely, the rooms are small but really clean and the beds are some of the most comfortable we have slept in and if you can see my other reviews we are very very fussy! Couldn't rate this little gem highly enough! Thank you so much

You have to remember that You are in effect staying in a Museum ; there are not that many rooms but they are very clean and charming and resonate the feel of how it was to stay there is the 1914-18 was and since. So the bathroom facilities are shared in as much as You leave Your room and go across Your short landing to very clean toilets and showers ; each room has a washstand as well. The breakfast is continental but a cooked breakfast is available and there is fresh tea/coffee/ scones with cream and jam all day long. a very detailed museum of the House is on site and free entry to those who are staying as well as an interesting gift shop. Well sited for Restaurants and other local sites and around 15/20 minutes from the Menin Gate where the last post has been played every night since the end of the first world war-apart from two years in the second war when the Germans would not allow it. This is a very moving experience and not to be missed. The house has a lovely garden as was used by so many soldiers resting from the Front as well as some quiet inside rooms to contemplate on the history of the house as well as a very peaceful chapel that is another place to sit and contemplate on what this house offered to these many young soldiers who often arrived direct from the mud and bullets of the front line for a few days rest. My expectations for Our two night visit were more than met by Ourselves and Our travelling guests. Unmissable I think.

Talbot House is an experience. The common areas (living room, dining room) invite exploration, The English garden is quite beautiful. The continental breakfast was good. The bedrooms are attractive and comfortable, each equipped with a sink. There is one bathroom per floor and it is shared by all staying on that floor.

Our 2 nights at Talbot House were lovely. The garden was full of daffodils, the sun shone and our hosts were a delightful couple from the Cotswolds who were very kind and extremely accommodating. What a lovely atmosphere of welcoming thoughtfulness. And of course the houses ability still to conjure up the safety, homeliness and rest it provided for the soldiers who stayed during WW1. It’s a wonderful base for anyone visiting the trenches and museums in the area. Thank you so much for a lovely stay.

The staff and volunteer wardens work so hard to meticulously maintain this beautiful guest house that once served British soldiers during WWI. They also provide a warm and welcoming atmosphere, and a great breakfast featuring locally made pastries each morning. I hope to return to Talbot House soon.
