It's next to the highway, and the office is higher up so you have to drive up to check in. When you check in and get the key, you can see the friendly horses. There is a shared kitchen and bathroom, which is generally sufficient.
You can see the starry sky when you sleep at night, which is very beautiful. It's just because it's on the side of the road, so there will be noise when fast cars drive by.

Gem of a place for a good price! The couple that runs the place are friendly and efficient. It has everything you need. Shower has good power and it has enough privacy (it’s closed off from anyone else by multiple curtains, in case you’re worried about an earlier review. I felt like visiting my grandparents on the countryside. Very homesie. Good wifi.

It's still a few kilometers away from Omarama. There's no village or shop in front of it. You have to drive there from where you live and have an office, separated by a pasture. Close to Highway 8, very noisy. There was basically no cell phone signal, and the store’s Wi-Fi didn’t work well. The advantage is that there is a large outdoor area, you can also use water pipes to flush the car, and it is also convenient for cooking.

We were looking for a sheep station and found Dunstan Downs. Price was right for an overnight. There were some sheep next to the property but the accommodations are offset from the main road - you check in up a driveway-lane at the property... Owners home - walk upstairs at the A-Frame and you'll be greeted there for instruction. Consider your timing on arrival (past 7pm is nearly too late). The couple have a life and arriving after this time is putting them out. If you're expecting to be surrounded by sheep - not the case here (we saw very few sheep). You share accommodations with others in a backpacking hostel setting (shared bath, showers, kitchen) - you will have a private room but are in close proximity to others. It's sufficient for a nights rest with clean bedding and room. Gender shared bathroom/showers so be prepared for this arrangement.

Geeva the host was absolutely lovely, but Orbitz did not give a complete description of the property. The place I booked didn't even have electricity. Geeva kindly offered me a queen room in it's place, but when I realized there was no fan and no flushing toilets (just a stinky outhouse) I quickly realized this was not for me. I fully expected to see sheep here and never saw one.

So lucky our accomodation in Omaramara was double booked and we ended up here. If you're looking for 4 star plus don't bother. This place is working sheep station, NOT a motel. It's rustic, comfortable and provides everything needed from free wifi, towels, cooking facilities & utensils and, a free laundry. Tim & Geva are great hosts & so relaxed. A gem of a find and great for astrophotography. A++++
