There is plenty of good to say about Big Cedar…beautiful grounds, friendly staff, so much to do. We expected all that for the price of the place. What we did not expect when we arrived is how old and tiny our room would be. Much smaller than an average motel room. The floors creak, and there are dingy robes in the closet that look like they have been hanging there since they built the place. No microwave. They make sure you will need to patronize their expensive restaurants. We were in Valley View because the rooms were the cheapest. But at twice the price of other nicer places we stay it certainly wasn’t worth it.

Here now, and we’d like to enjoy the pool but there is ZERO SHADE. The chairs are dark, faux wicker which gets blazing hot, and there are NO UMBRELLAS. Only shade is umbrellas at the dining tables. And the cabanas for rent are only in the adults-only section. It’s like these people have never been to a pool in summer.

Used to come here often in the first 10 years it was open. Then just occasionally as life got busy. We are here now. This place is now simply huge. Almost too huge for our liking but still wonderful. Something for everyone. We have a Falls Lodge Premium King room . The free shuttle service is efficient and fabulous. But the roads are a bit confusing if trying to drive. The signage isn’t great to the unfamiliar. Food has been awesome at Devils Pool, Wormsn House, and Osage. Tomorrow we are doing the golf cart cave tour and museum at Top of the Rock. Even if you have no kids, go get lunch at Uncle Bucks in Fun Mountain to see all the cool activities kids are doing. It’s fun to observe. My only complaint is of a delicate nature: the toilets in Falls Lodge are sooooo low. Old style before ADA. Every resort or hotel we’ve stayed in the last few years have the higher toilets, even the budget hotels. But especially nice resorts. This is a problem with arthritis, age, creaky joints even though generally good health. With all Johnny’s money, could he not update the toilets? I won’t stay here again because of it, even though it’s an exquisite place otherwise. It’s that much of a problem. No, we don’t want or need a disabled room. Just a toilet that doesn’t feel like you’re sitting on the floor and can hardly get back up. Just saying.

Big Cedar used to be affectionately called the “Ritz In The Woods” now it’s a Holiday Inn at best. We’ve personally been coming for years and have watched the resort devolve. Personally, the fix is simple: have amenities for wilderness club guests and amenities for Big Cedar guests only. You’re mixing very different clientele - the wrist bands tell the tale.

Disappointed So Far – Hoping for a Change We had high expectations for this resort given the price point, but unfortunately, our experience so far has fallen short. Our room on the first floor smells strongly of musk, is not properly cleaned, and we’ve already encountered multiple bugs—including centipedes. Even more frustrating has been the staff’s response. Rather than trying to help, the attitude has been more “cannot do” than solution-oriented. We asked to be moved but were told it’s not possible. If the resort takes steps to resolve these issues, I’ll gladly update this review. But at this point, it’s been a disappointing start to what was supposed to be a relaxing stay.

Big Cedar Lodge is very big - you really can't walk anywhere. The shuttle service is very helpful and the drivers are a source of great information. We could not get the same room for all 4 nights - so we stayed in a cottage the first night. We were assured we would get into a cabin for the next 3 nights before the check in time of 4 pm because we were "homeless" from 11 am to 4pm. When I made the reservation, when I called multiple times to ask if something had opened - I was consistently assured I would get in early. We checked out before 11 and our next room was not available until 4:30. Again multiple calls had assured us we could get in early (Courtney was one of those on the phone) but the reception desk was not helpful and kept saying they would text us when our room was ready. It was 4:30 pm when we finally got a text. The resort was not fully booked - it was clear there were other 2 bedroom cabins that were empty all day long. For that much money they couldn't get us in a room????? Additionally this place nickel and dimes you on every little thing. It ends up being a VERY EXPENSIVE VACATION. Pools were like bathtubs - they made no effort to cool the water down. And there are barely any umbrellas to get relief from the sun - but you can pay hundreds of dollars for a cabana. Disappointing expensive trip that I would not recommend.

This was our 4th trip. But probably our last. It’s starting to show some neglect. See rotted out post below. We got a cabin for a few days. Ate on the property twice. Did the golf cart tour, the works. It was peaceful and quiet which was great. Amenities were great. The lodge has a view. The cabins not so much.
