This place is situated at the most critical waterhole in Etosha visited by a leopard a lioness and many rhinos all night If you stay at the waterhole chalets you can even watch the waterhole all night and it is amazing The food is a disaster basically: what they gave me as vegetarian dinner I would not give to my pet -to say the least- it was a messy pasta with some left over veggies on it. The pasta was broken soggy and tasteless. The worst food I had in Namibia. I stayed at this place purely for the waterhole

Okaukuejo would be a solid 4/5 except for one thing - as many have observed, it is oevrpriced for the standard of accomdation. On the postive side, I found the staff at the reception and restaurant all friendly and helpful (can't say the same for the gate staff). The food (Oryx steak) was absolutely fine, beer was cold, shower hot, and room clean - so all the essentials are covered. They just need to either upgrade the chalets or bring the pricing in line with the standard; but as the camp was fully booked, I think there is little incentive to do either.

We entered Etosha at Anderson Gate on 7 April, day 8 of 25 and drove to Okaukuejo Camp for one night. We took the first dirt road to the left on entering the park but turned back halfway since it turned into a large “lake”. They had had a lot of rain about ten days prior. Saw a few giraffes. Checked into the camp and had 2 rooms next to each other. Pretty basic, but that’s how the park accommodation has always been, and we hadn’t been expecting anything different. The pools were clean and refreshing. Dinner was a satisfactory meal in the restaurant. We sat at the floodlit waterhole for about an hour that night but only heard birds. Game not dependent on this waterhole at the moment. Next morning we drove out the camp, turned left and headed towards Okondeka and did the loop back via Adamax. The park was so green, and the pan was filled with water. Lots of flowers, springbok, wildebeest, an ostrich pair with 4 chicks, 3 jackal cubs totally engrossed in their game right next to the car, zebras. Headed to Namutoni and then Onguma. Had to navigate many deep pools of water along the main road and saw a variety of game including oryx and two male lions near Namutoni. We enjoy staying in the park and don’t mind basic accommodation. Best if you can take supplies with you and bbq. Can’t wait to go again.

For the entire 3 days/2 night stay, we got absolutely pummelled with thunderstorms and this campsite simply can’t hold up to that. There were enormous muddy puddles everywhere and I had to walk around endless puddles and through little rivers just to get to the bathrooms (which are truly horrendous btw, muddy and filled with cockroaches). There is also only one ablution block for a huuuge campground, so it got very busy and very dirty. The campsites have absolutely no privacy and most don’t have big enough trees to create any shade. The staff seem exhausted and overwhelmed and I felt really sorry for them (dealing with hordes of displeased Germans is no easy task). I think during the dry season this would be a slightly less stressful experience, because it really was the rain that made it so rough. It’s still the cheapest place you can camp in the area, and the only place you can camp if you want to be inside the Western side of the park. If you are a less avid wildlife enthusiast than me (aka you’re not gonna get up at 5am to be the first person out of the camp gates to go see the early morning action), you could definitely camp somewhere nicer just outside the park gates and just drive into the park every day. This campsite is 50/50 because I would recommend staying inside the park, but the NWR resorts in Etosha need some serious work.

Don’t go there ! This place is a shame for Namibia. Everything was bad: unfriendly welcome, unfriendly restaurant booking, dirty room, dangerous electric installation in the room, … This is not representing the rest of our great experience in Namibia. What a pity. I would prefer sleeping in my car or with lions rather than going back there.
