If you think Premier Inn, this hotel is not dissimilar. The staff on arrival were very welcoming and pointed me in the direction of the adjoining accommodation block. The room was functional and the bathroom, whilst reasonably well appointed, was in need of better better housekeeping and required some refurbishment. Black mould around the bath and in the corners are never a great sight. The shower was almost unusable as the head pointed towards the end of the bath and thus soaked the floor of the bathroom. A fixed head would be a better solution. The food in the Barn was reasonably priced and restaurant was busy with both hotel guests and customers taking advantage of the 'before 7pm' menu. Once again, the staff were charming and efficient. The food is not gourmet but it was hot (big plus), tasty and reasonably priced. Breakfast is served in another area away from the bar and was a little disappointing. There's not much choice and for my cooked breakfast, I received a single burnt small sausage and one rasher of bacon: however the scrambled eggs were perfect. The coffee was, by modern standards, pretty dreadful. Once again, there was a charming lady who eagerly looked after the weary guests. The accommodation block was obviously not a recent addition. the sound proofing between the ground and first floor is non existent and I was woken up at 5.55am by the guest above and his heavy footsteps and shower. If I needed accommodation in the Newport area, I would return to The Old Barn Inn on condition that my room was on the first floor. It's good value for money.
