Compass Rose Inn

LOVED our stay at Compass Rose! Location is unbeatable to access all that downtown Newburyport has to offer by foot, as well as a short beautiful drive to Plum Island. We stayed in the room with private access and it was great. As clean as other reviews note! Loved the breakfast - simple but comprehensive and good quality. Enjoyed the port wine in the living room! Really appreciate a standard 11 a.m. check out time. One suggestion would be to update the information binder in the room as many pages are quite outdated. Will definitely return!!

Caitlyn and Kenzi were absolutely wonderful and so accommodating and welcoming. The inn is beautiful and in the perfect location - walkable to EVERYTHING. My 89 year old parents stayed there and there is a beautiful first floor option so no stairs! The breakfasts were delicious. The inn is quiet and you feel like you have the whole place to yourself. A wonderful summer oasis.

We’ve just returned from a lovely stay at the Compass Rose Inn in Newburyport, first time, and it did not disappoint. The place is immaculate—truly spotless—and every detail feels thoughtful, from the soft paint tones that speak to that classic New England charm, to the quiet elegance throughout the inn. It’s close enough to town that you can walk to the shops, the boardwalk, and restaurants with ease, but just far enough off the bustle to enjoy a peaceful night’s sleep. And sleep you will—the beds, the pillows, the sheets… you sink right in and don’t want to get out. In the evening, there's port wine and homemade cookies waiting in the common room—a small touch, but it goes a long way. Everything about the Compass Rose feels warm, welcoming, and just right. We will be back for sure. It’s one of those rare places that feels like a bit of home—only better. Note: Make sure you go to Abes, just down the street, for the best bagel you will ever have !

Very nice spacious accommodations. Had dinner in the lighthouse and stayed one night. Location is perfect and breakfast was great.

I usually don't totally trust all the internet reviews, but in this case everything positive that has been said was true. Unfortunately, I only got to stay one night - I only wish I could have stayed at least one or many more nights. The room was wonderful. The breakfast was excellent. The location is perfect. I hope to be able to come back sometime soon!

Overall, we had a fairly pleasant stay. But there were a few things that let this lovely property down. There are some quirks to the room we stayed in that would have been alleviated by a quick tour of the room with the innkeeper. Unfortunately, the innkeeper is only available on site for a few hours each day, primarily in the morning. Otherwise you're on your own (you can call, but they aren't onsite). Would we stay again? Possibly. We would try another property in Newburyport first. Sleep/Rest: 5/5. No complaints from us! Cleanliness & Amenities: 4/5. Very clean. Breakfast was an extended Continental and was the same both mornings we were there. Would get very boring if we had stayed longer. There were small sweets (cookies) put out in a cloche as an afternoon treat, but they remained there for three days in a row without refreshment--you could tell because someone had taken half a cookie and left the other half there. Staff & Service: 4/5. Would have liked an onsite innkeeper. The innkeeper was friendly and helpful when onsite. Safety & privacy: 5/5 Very secure inside, neighborhood was lovely and safe. Parking was right outside, so we could see our vehicle from our window anytime we wanted to. Noise level: 4/5. Pretty quiet inside the room when people were not walking by in the hallway. But people coming down the stairs from the third floor made quite a lot of noise right outside our room. Neighborhood is quiet during overnight hours, despite there being a (quite good) Mexican restaurant right across the street. Room difficulties: - Took us a while to find the thermostat hiding behind the door into the bedroom--never would have found it if we hadn't closed the double doors. We were quite uncomfortable after we closed the windows against street noise, until we finally found out we had our own room temperature control. - One set of Roman shades was broken (in the bathroom) upon our arrival, and another had fallen down out of the window bracket. We managed to put it back up into the bracket. But we then had issues with every single one of the Roman shades getting either stuck at the fully open or fully closed position. The innkeeper did come by to help us close the shades, but then we had to leave them that way or risk not being able to get them closed again. This took away from the charm of having a suite with large windows that were capable of giving us a lot of natural light.
