NYC Empire Apartments

AVOID. This is low quality accommodation in a great location. The room was outside the elevator and you could hear every movement of neighbouring apartments. The host was rude and when we called to say about the rooms their response was 'what do you expect me to do' The bed was a broken camp bed and uncomfortable. The room smelt of onions. The room was small. We did not feel safe. We only stayed one night of the four booked and moved to a new clean and nice hotel - which was a similar price. they did not refund our stay.

First off, these apartments are in a really great location and are a good value. It is not actually a scam. I found this stay through a major booking engine. When I book a property I will often book directly with the hotel because it usual gives me more direct control over my booking. I did that at the nycempireapartments website. After booking, I received no email confirmation, only the on screen confirmation. Thankfully I was smart enough to save a copy. It got very sketchy from here. For two weeks I could recall my reservation on the website but the reservation would only say "pending". When I tried to make contact with them I learned that they only have a virtual phone number that is forwarded to whatever thickly accented person is working at the time. There were many other red flags along the way that I won't drone on about. By 2 months in I was sure that I had been scammed, or that I was dealing with a small business that was loosely run and not so together. Fortunately, it was the later. My experience was good although checkin was a bit of a mess. I would rent from them again but I would book through a major booking source for piece of mind. The website has improved some, so not all the reviews read "e pluribus unum.."
