Full of eclectic promise for the booking site but, as is often the case, the reality was different. Host was lovely but the room was tiny and cramped. I don’t understand why there’s a microwave but no drawers. Why there was such a massive bed in such a tiny room. Why the ensuite had a toilet type sink but minimal accessible shelf space - what there was, was full of towels. Also, the hotels recommended eateries were awful. Parking is very very limited and not on site. On a plus side, it was warm, clean and the toiletries were lovely. I just think the priorities were wrong. Very central in New Plymouth and close to the beach

A lovely, comfortable and welcoming hotel which is perfectly located to explore New Plymouth. Very comfortable room which, although a little small, was perfect for me on my own. Luke was very welcoming and helpful and options to eat and drink were plentiful nearby. A great find at a good price - I’d highly recommend this hotel if you’re thinking of visiting NP!!!

We loved everything about The State Hotel. The hotel itself is a work of art, quite literally! Gorgeous immaculately clean room, easy after hours access and car park, perfect location and friendly hotel staff! We would definitely stay here again on a return trip to New Plymouth.

This is a great location for both exploring the surprisingly walkable city, and for a quiet, lazy, "there's a grey cloud out there, so Im'a just going to lay back and enjoy my books" experience. Joe's Garage downstairs, frankly, encourages the latter. It is worth noting, though, that State is all upstairs, and there's no life, so be cautious is Accessibility is a concern.

We recently had the pleasure of staying at State Hotel and I can confidently say it was one of the most delightful experiences I've had. This boutique hotel is a true gem, offering a perfect blend of comfort, style, and in a great location. If you're looking for a truly memorable stay in New Plymouth, I highly recommend the State Hotel. It's a place where you can relax, unwind, and experience the best of what NP has to offer.

I've stayed here twice this year for work, and loved my time there. I travel from Melbourne to New Plymouth a few times a year and the State Hotel is a lovely boutique hotel in a really great location in the city, easy walk to restaurants, the water and shops. The reception staff are so friendly, and go above and beyond to help, and always responsive when reaching out. The hotel is very modern/clean and the onsite free laundry is a real help when travelling for work. I look forward to staying there again soon.

While I visited with my mum and we loved our stay, I can vouch that The State would be an excellent base for a couple's getaway. The State has character and class. An eclectic collection of art adorns the stairs and hallway. The guest lounge reminds me of a room one would retire to for cigars and whiskey after dinner. The bed was comfortable, the shower great and the room was quiet. Luke was exceptionally welcoming and hospitable. Highly recommended.

Would definately stay here again. Wonderful rooms, beautiful decor and truly welcoming hosts. Fabulous old fashioned service in a stunning setting. Very central to everything, walking through town or visiting the breathtaking gardens. Loved relaxing in the guest lounge, that was a real bonus!
