Monmouth is a beautiful setting to spend some quiet days in Natchez. It feels far from town but is only a mile from downtown. The staff was so kind, welcoming, and helpful. And breakfast – a lovely plate of Southern fare prepared by a team led by Mary. Her French toast is famous but do not miss her delicious homemade granola on the sidebar. Heads up – be careful of your room choice. I’m sure there must be some fine rooms, but we didn’t have one of them. Our Courtyard Building room looked like it was decorated poorly in the 1970’s to imitate the 1870’s. Carpet was worn, furniture was stained, faucet handles fell off in our hands, the shower was a tiny spritz of water which took too long to warm, the bed was worn and saggy…. This was no Shaker Village. I wanted to appreciate the historic nature of the facility but it felt more like a trip to grandma’s house – the poor grandmother. There are lots of lovely homes and B&B’s in Natchez. Monmouth is one to consider – historic house, lovely grounds, and delightful host staff. Enjoy breakfast. But choose well on the room.
