We stayed recently for four nights at the hotel in a water view room with a balcony and a fantastic close up view of the lake. Check-in was fairly smooth with a small issue being addressed by Kelly at the front desk. It was hot and the lobby bar was very welcoming and Daniel the bartender an excellent host and as it turned out an excellent mixologist. The Pub offers more casual fare and has a nice patio. The breakfast buffet is pretty expansive but could use a few more change ups to the scrambled eggs. That happened once in the 4 days. They could also use better supervision of the plate supply and the status of the coffee urn. The crowning jewel of the resort however is the Rousseau dining room. The food was 5 star with exceptional sushi over lunch, and creative and beautifully prepared and presented dinner items in the evening. The desserts are works of art and delicious. Custom cocktails are imaginatively presented and truly an experience. There are a few minor things the new owners (2023) could address about the rooms with some of the furniture tired and banged up but our room had new beds and lovely furniture on the balcony so those concerns can be hopefully addressed. The pool is quite nice but not fantastic from an accessibility point of view as the stairs are wide and flat and the hand rail not quite long enough. A standard pool ladder would easily fix this. Room rates for high summer were reasonable but they should probably just fold in the daily resort fee. Overall I would recommend the Hotel and would stay again.

My family and I had the great pleasure of spending part of our summer holidays at Windermere House this July, and it was everything we hoped it would be. This historic resort, originally built in 1870, carries a rich legacy. Although it tragically burned down in 1996 during the filming of a movie, it was impressively rebuilt within a year to match the original design. Since then, it has undergone renovations multiple times. What you get is the best of both worlds: timeless charm with all the modern comforts. Staying here truly feels like stepping into a bygone era, yet nothing feels outdated or tired. Sitting out on the front lawn, it’s easy to imagine generations of guests who’ve relaxed in those same Muskoka chairs overlooking the lake for over 150 years. Our room was spacious, spotless, and very comfortable. The bathroom was modern and clean, with only two minor drawbacks: only one sink and a shower head with a rather thin stream. Still, it functioned well and didn’t detract from the overall experience. There's good, free wi-fi throughout the hotel and outside. The hotel's shared spaces, including the elegant lobby, the cozy lobby bar, the upscale Russo restaurant, and the more casual downstairs Windermere Pub, are all beautifully designed. They strike the right balance between classic country resort and stylish modern retreat. We enjoyed an exceptional dinner at Russo Restaurant; both the food and service were top-notch. The Windermere Pub offers a more relaxed and affordable option, with equally great service and a lovely outdoor patio. The lobby bar was perfect for a casual drink or light snack, echoing the resort’s old-world character with updated elegance. Breakfast was a real standout. The buffet offered an abundant spread: fresh fruit, muffins, smoked salmon, cheeses, yogurt, cold cereals, scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, French toast, and delicious seasoned breakfast potatoes. It’s available from 8:00 to 10:00 a.m. most days. One morning, the French toast arrived a bit late, but when it did, it was absolutely worth the wait. Throughout our stay, the staff were consistently warm, friendly, and attentive. We also spent a lot of time at the pool area, which was beautifully laid out with plenty of Muskoka chairs, loungers, and shaded spots. It’s the kind of place where you lose track of time. While I didn’t try them myself, the three large barrel saunas beside the pool looked fantastic. There’s no shortage of things to do here. There's complimentary access to canoes, kayaks, and paddleboards on the lake. There’s also a tennis court, and pickleball equipment, our first time playing, and it was a blast. The basketball stand was a bit low and needed to be straightened, but otherwise, it worked well. The outdoor fire pit and seating area were terrific - very warm and cozy. One of our favourite spots was the grand outdoor veranda. Although much of it is used for restaurant seating, there are generous sections with deep, comfortable chair

We have been going to this hotel at least twice a summer with friends for years and years. We were happy when there was new ownership, thinking the place would improve. Last summer, it was noticeably improved with some rooms renovated. Our visit this year was the worst we have ever experienced and aren actively looking for somewhere else to go! Our third floor corner rooms had not been renovated. We got into our room at 4pm but our guests didn’t get in until 5pm and the cleaners were in the middle of cleaning their room. The following day, we returned to our room at 4pm and our room hadn’t been touched. I tried to call to reception repeatedly and finally had to walk downstairs to speak to the front desk to ask why neither of the two rooms had been cleaned. She said she’d take care of it but nothing happened and I tried again to call reception but no answer…had to walk downstairs to ask where the cleaners were. Receptionist told me there’s a policy not to answer the phone when they are serving clients at the desk. By this time it was after 5pm and the cleaners had all gone for the day. She said she’d take care would send up a maintenance man. He finally arrived with a bag of towels. I again told the receptionist that we needed the room CLEANED. The maintenance man came and sprayed clean the bathroom surfaces and changed the sheets. We were finally able to shower and changed for dinner after 5:30pm for a 6:00pm drinks and dinner. Our guests never got their room cleaned or fresh towels. There were no apologies and we paid $900 per night for each room. Shocking. The included breakfast was only mediocre and the food only lukewarm, ditto for the coffee. Don’t waste your money, this place is deteriorating and it seems like the new owners have stopped general maintenance and are having trouble getting enough quality staff.
