What a shame!! beautiful village, stunning location. cosy looking hotel. Food was lovely, really delicious evening meal. breakfast, not so much Rooms awful. paper thin walls, very very badly needs updating. bathroom was dreadful. Staff all ok but no real customer service, they all looked really grumpy, they were pleasant enough but got the feeling they'd rather not be there and guests were a necessary annoyance. No extra pillows, mattress uncomfortable. we both had trouble sleeping as we had no option than to listen to the guests staying in the adjoining rooms. Please don't be fooled by the website bedroom pic, did not look like this. We stayed in a cupboard!! This hotel has so much history and so much potential. A bit of TLC would go along way and make a huge difference

Individual quirks are fine, but run down bedrooms desperately in need of TLC are not. Cheerful staff are fine, those who lack basic front of house skills are not. The result is Marmite- somewhat chaotic and crying out for stronger management. Our room (allocation something of a lottery) comfortable enough to sleep well, but shabby and difficult to justify the price paid when basic things like tv, kettle, taps etc wouldn’t work properly, let alone the pool. The kitchen however did an impressive job and dinner was good, breakfast haphazard with clueless staff failing to replenish (photo taken at 8.45) Reception similarly friendly but unprofessional- all in all poorly managed, lacking basic organisation and attention to detail. Advice from one experienced in improving the fortunes of similar establishments- identify your failings, get a grip of them, examine staffing levels and training, then invest wisely in key areas. Result - real pride throughout the team, and happy guests.

Broke journey back from West Wales to avoid Friday night traffic in England. Olde world town, narrow streets and some challenging farm traffic. There is a road to the left just before the hotel with entrance to an adequate car park on right, from which the hotel can be accessed. The rooms are up a couple of flights of narrow stairs and the numbering is a bit confusing. Room was as one would expect of a building of it's age, bed comfortable. Shower was virtually unusable, the control knobs were scarcely functional and I would advise need to be set prior to entry into the bath, due to the very hot hot water supply. Dinner meal was good as was breakfast. There is a very good pub just down the road from the hotel with price of beer reasonable and a friendly publican. If choice here is not to one's liking.

Nice and quaint hotel from 17th century historic building.Great location, hotel staff was very friendly and helpful, food was great. Hotel room could do with a little bit more of maintenace. Historic Montgomery castle located 10 minutes walk. Good value for money.

The Dragon is situated in a delightful town which is worth a visit for itself. Now, the hotel: rooms are difficult to access as all are up steep stairs and there are no lifts as the building cannot (?) accommodate them. This is a nightmare for all but the fittest, particularly when you are also toting luggage. There are no ground floor rooms so the hotel is entirely unsuitable for anyone with mobility issues - anyone with even mild walking difficulties would have a problem. My room- a double - had a high unreachable window (used a coat hanger to open it!) and the furniture was ill-assorted and mis-matched. There was some old ‘brown’ furniture, scuffed and stained, no wardrobe just an odd hall-stand affair with a few wooden hangers but no skirt/trouser hangers. All very odd and not nice. The room was clean but drab . The bathroom looked like it had been refurbished nicely. Hah, despite appearances, the shower experience was dismal as the water pressure is woeful. Apparently the hotel literature mentions this as if to excuse it! This is the C21st guys- there are remedies! The toiletries provided are a dual purpose shampoo/body wash (not acceptable for women) and conditioner in the shower and liquid hand soap at the basin. All good quality and smell delicious - but don’t make up for the other shortcomings. And no shower cap despite being shower-only, and no body lotion. The evening food offering has been streamlined (dumbed down I’d say) since my last visit to easy, predictable choices whereas there was a much more imaginative menu previously- disappointing - and I wouldn’t want to be staying more than one night as I’d be pushed for choice. Breakfast choice was very good however and service throughout by the young staff was excellent. The hotel has changed hands and prices hiked with no justification by way of improvements. The pool has been closed, despite the fact there’s still a photo of it on the website and its billing on the hotel’s external sign. There are lots of hotels in old and historic buildings that have modern amenities - the Dragon needs to drag itself into the C21st!

Firstly Montgomery is a real find, we only booked in the area to visit Powis castle but Montgomery town is a lovely small historic town with castle ruins above. The dragon is an old coaching house type hotel we had a small room in the attic space and slept well. Food in the bistro was very good my wife said the lentil burger was the best she'd ever had and my homemade lasagna was very good. Breakfast was very nice not a massive choice but all very good. The staff were all young very friendly and helpful and overall we really enjoyed our visit. A walk round the historic town , the castle , the ironmongers and seeing the town is well worth it.

We stayed here for 2 nights in July, we had a ‘superior’ room which was very basic. There were no hot chocolate, no shower cap or little exras you would find in a hotel room. The sink pedastal had a huge chip in it too. Yes the rooms are clean and tidy, but having to pay £266 for 2 nights with very little sleep was not good. The hotel is old and the room above us were extremely noisy! Getting up at before 6am they were sure trying to get their 10,000 steps in before 8am! Then there were all the talking, hearing every word spoken! The housekeepers arrive at about 8am and open all the cupboards on the landings so if your not already awake you soon will be! Then the bistro played music from when the opened at 7am! Unfortunatley i wouldnt recommend this hotel if you want a good nights sleep. Breakfast was OK but nothing special.
