A very special place indeed, absolutely beautiful set around a large pond with 2 beautiful ducks and Koi carp, there was a fresh water spring so we had the soothing sound of the water. Lovely room with indoor and outdoor private onset. The Lovely owner greeted us at dinner each evening, staff went out of their way for us .Lots of wonderful places to visit in the sounding area.

The Hozantei ryokan is a collection of traditional Japanese rooms, situated around a small koi carp pond and garden area. Rooms are Japanese style, some having their own outdoor hot spring bath overlooking the nearby river. The location is lovely, the rooms are perhaps a little dated but the service from all staff was excellent throughout our stay. Food in the restaurant, both for breakfast and dinner was plentiful and excellent.

I checked Tabelog and chose the inn in Kurokawa Onsen that seemed to have the highest customer reviews. I purposely ignored other indicators, such as TripAdvisor. Like Yufuin, Kurokawa Onsen has many popular inns, making it difficult to choose. Nakai and his friends were mostly Korean (and other foreigners?), and while they seemed to be cutting costs, it wasn't unpleasant. The fact that each room had two or so baths was very nice. The rooms were cheaply built, like Japanese-style bungalows. Dinner wasn't as good as the reviews suggested, which was disappointing, but the portions were generous. I didn't check, but perhaps the head chef has changed. While the inn was reasonably priced, there are likely better inns in Kurokawa (such as Yamamizuki). Tabelog, at least, doesn't seem to be helpful when choosing an inn in Kurokawa. It's difficult to use. Unlike previous years, Hozantei has been dropped from the "Kyushu Hot Spring Inn Ranking Top 100" in "Mapple Hot Spring Inn Kyushu" 2021.
