On a positive note the staff were friendly, helpful and polite. However, the room was so cold as the radiator hadn’t been put on The bed was lumpy and not comfortable. We were kept awake by someone in the room above pacing up and down whilst on the phone and the floorboards creaked Sadly, the hotel is in need of updating . It looks dated and shabby. Ending on a positive it was really clean, sheets bathroom etc It’s just a bit sad as I stayed there a few years ago and it was much better

We visited for a Sunday carvery, which had been recommended to us by a couple of different people. The first thing to say is the restaurant area was quite dated. Where we were sat was in a partitioned area, the partition being an old fashioned, strange looking wood and glass structure. The tables in that area are a bit too close together too. I had pork and turkey, which was pretty good. Unfortunately the veg was way overcooked. Also, I noticed that when freshly prepared veg was brought through it was dumped on top of the veg that was already there. £32.80 for two standard carveries and two pints of lime cordial is a bit too much considering what we were getting. Very disappointing.

I would rather stay in a shelter than here! the beds are falling apart, the mattresses are very uncomfortable the springs are awful, the floors are sticky and very stained, everything was very dated like from a 3rd hand shop and to top it off we had BEDBUGS!! We left at 2am with no with no where to go we had to sleep in the car! There was no apology from the night staff we were just told to write a note down for the morning staff…. The supervisor was very helpful in the morning with regards to our issues and he was very apologetic still not ideal having to sleep in a car and ruining a weekend break with family.

My experience of the Bessemer hotel for a 4 night stay On booking in to the hotel I was informed that there was no key cards for the doors as there was an issue with the machine & we would have to be let in by a member of staff & that an engineer was booked to sort it , when we got to our room we found not clean , stains on the walls , bed was broken, a chair was broken , very antiquated and the noise from the kitchen . At 9 o'clock at night the noise that came from room 202 was absolutely horrendous so I went to reception to complain who did ring the room but never went up to the room so at 10 o'clock whilst the noise was still going we packed and went down to reception who informed us they was fully booked so could do nothing else for us so we booked out on the same day .we did try to find another place to stay in the valleys but all was fully booked due to something going on in the area whitch meant we had no option but to make a 6 hr journey back home to Norfolk the same day .and our holiday completely ruined I would strongly advise keeping clear of the Bessemer hotel it in serious need of a complete make over ,

I had bigger expectations for this hotel, but it turned out to be highly overrated. Upon entering the room, I was greeted by a rotting (& nauseating) smell, which turned out to be coming from the shower curtain. The floors creaked so loudly that it not only disturbed us when walking in the room, but also every time someone walked down the hallway. The bed linens were torn, the bedside lamp was missing a bulb, the walls were cracked here and there, and the peephole on the room door was stuffed with a tissue paper. The bed base was in tatters, and to top it all off, I suspect there were bedbugs in room 213 based on the bites I received. The pictures speak for themselves. Overall, the hotel is completely outdated. Although it wasn't expensive, I expected better for the price. Additionally, there was no alternative milk option at the breakfast, which was an extra charge, despite informing them during pre-check-in that two of our group members are lactose intolerant. Instead of decent coffee, they only offered instant Nescafé powder. I would not recommend staying here.

We've been staying at the Bessemer for many years now. Morgan and the staff are genuinely friendly and make you feel welcomed as soon as you walk through the door. The rooms are very tidy and clean with everything you need (including space!) The breakfast and dinners are really nice and the carvery is excellent We'll be back again next year.

Avoid like the plague. This hotel has seriously gone downhill. Shabby, tatty and grubby, in need of a complete refurbishment. If there is nowhere else available in Merthyr and you end up here, do not stay in Room 202. Bed very uncomfortable, and don't even look at the matress! The extractor fan for the kitchen is below the window and sounds like a train passing and the accompanying smell of cabbage or fry up - depending on the time of day - is definitely one to be avoided. Bathroom old fashioned with grubby shower curtain. Some parts of the skirting board missing and sticky light switches above the bed. Staff very unprofessional. Witnessed an argument between owners and staff in the bar area. The Welsh breakfast was cheap and nasty, breakfast staff miserable and again complaining. Shame really as this used to be a basic but welcoming, clean hotel. Staff used to be happy, now they look downtrodden. I understand that there are new owners so hopefully they will turn things around otherwise there is going to be the inevitable closure.

Awful - don’t book here. Not sure where to start….. positive - lovely Ellie on reception, never has a member of staff remained so cheerful in such an awful hotel environment, thank you Ellie. The rest: The noise in room 202 was reminiscent of the room I had in halls of residence situated next to the boiler room. The toilet seat fell off if you had the audacity to use the loo. No hairdryer. The Elastoplast used to plug the hole in the toilet door lock. Stepping into the bath I reached for the towel rail which promptly came away in my hand. The stains all over the carpet 🤮 The carpet felt tacky to the touch & we really didn’t want to take our shoes off. The Welsh breakfast consisting of 1 sausage, 1 rasher of bacon, 1 slice of toast & beans that tasted of Parma violets - 2 plum tomatoes & 1 fried egg. All served with a dour look 👀 of defeat. The crockery was stained & the urn was full of luke warm water for tea/coffee. When we asked if we could use the kettle from our room to make tea they turned the temperature up on the urn - the waitress then stuck her finger in a sample of water & decreed it hot enough for tea!!! Breakfast room was freezing. The bar closes at 9.30pm & when we asked the night porter for some drinks we were told a firm “no but there’s a garage down the road to buy some drinks.” Sat afternoon the owner was in reception with the staff & we overheard him complaining to them - not the staff at fault. He needs to spend some money on the place. We were lucky - a family group meeting up for a great weekend, we laughed our way through it. Next time we get together in Merthyr we’ll avoid The Bessemer like the plague.
