The George Inn

Having seen a number of positive reviews, this makes our experience all the more surprising. We had, possibly, the worst food we've ever paid for. My wife's pork chop looked barely cooked and the vegetables were almost raw. My steak and ale pie was almost totally pastry with no filling - likewise, my vegetables were not cooked. My wife sent back her food and it was returned after about 10 mins but still inedible. I should have sent back my pie but had rather lost the will to live. The waiting staff were perfectly pleasant but the chef should have hung his head in shame

This was a one night stay after visiting Stourhead with friends. It is in a convenient location just off the A303. Our rooms were clean and comfortable. The evening meal was wonderful with friendly helpful service. I would recommend The George for a stay or for meal.

Just a 1-night stay while passing through, but a great stay! We wanted to stay somewhere quirky and characterful, and The George Inn was perfect. Great location, great room, great staff, great decor in the restaurant/bar; complimentary breakfast was good too. Would happily stay again.

What a lovely hotel. The staff and owner are very friendly. We came for my mums wedding it was a perfect place to stay. Rooms very clean and has everything you need. Breakfast was lush and was even asked if we wanted some more. We will definitely be back highly recommended

Fabulous location, village and pub! We stopped for lunch after a long drive and were given a warm welcome by Matthew and team. A really great pub and we plan to stay the night next time we’re here with a bit more time to explore and enjoy to the full. Thank you!

Wow! Pie night on a Thursday at The George in Mere, is highly recommended. We had the Steak Pie and the Chicken and Leek. Both were substantial and full of flavour. Great beer and friendly service. We will definately be back for the Steak night on a Saturday. Highly recommended. Well done and thank you.to all involved.

My stay at George Inn was the worst hotel experience I've ever had. As a frequent traveller, I rely on basic amenities to function smoothly, but George Inn failed on all fronts. From the start, I was met with chaos during breakfast, with no food available and staff unprepared. Despite this warning sign, I proceeded with my stay, which proved to be a mistake. The room was outdated, with a small TV and tangled curtains that were nearly impossible to close. The shower was unusable—only cold water ran, and when it finally started to warm, it cut off entirely. After reporting this, a staff member admitted there was likely air in the pipes but did nothing to resolve the issue. Adding to the frustration, there was no Wi-Fi, and I had to rely on my mobile data for the entire stay. There was no breakfast in the morning as promised, leaving me to start my workday without a proper meal or shower. Upon checkout, when I reported these issues, the owner confronted me and argued about my complaints, which was completely unprofessional. George Inn is clearly in the wrong business, and I would strongly advise against staying there.

Just spent 6 days B&B at The George Inn. Mainly exploring the local area. Found the Inn to be very welcoming. The room was very comfortable and quiet even though it was next to the main road. Food, excellent with lots of variations on the menu. Special food evenings seem to be very popular. Car parking also no problem. The Landlord Lee was very friendly and chatty, only taken over the Inn recently and great ambitions for the property. I wish him and all the staff well for the future.

Sat chatting with a couple of friends and Lee the Landlord/Chef came over with a sharing plate of food on the house, very nice Pie full to the brim and crispy golden chunky chips, I’ve had a few pies since and haven’t been disappointed, roll on pie night 😊
