Hotel Riu Gran Canaria - All Inclusive

Recently stayed at this hotel for 10 nights. On the first morning we realised there was an ant invasion in our room overnight. We hadn't had taken any food or drink to the room, but there they were, about 400 or so on the first morning, in the bathroom and trailing back into the wardrobe. Not the best start to the holiday. We then found ants in the room and wardrobe every day, despite not having anything other than water in the room to drink. Bathroom towels were too small and very thin, which required them to be changed more often. Mini bar in room contained soft drinks and bottled water which was replaced every two days. The floor in our room was not cleaned to a good standard, the same hairs and debris remained from day one. There were long black hairs around the bottom of the loo, not mine, and a faeces stain in the bidet which we had never used. The maid topped up our toilet roll with half a roll from another room one day, not exactly the 4 star experience. Aside from the room, which wasn't clean enough, the rest of the hotel was kept lovely and clean. The walls are paper thin, you can hear your neighbours using the loo and everything they do. The grounds were immaculate, the gardeners are the unsung heros of this place. The food on the whole was really good, repetitive, but good. I would have liked to have gluten free bread rolls or breakfast cereal but there wasn't any and often items were not labelled. Cocktails were pre-made sugary cocktails, far too syrupy and undrinkable for me. A general lack of branded drinks, and all alcohol was hidden away at the cocktail bar so you couldn't see what was on offer. I personally only discovered tanquery gin which was drinkable and to my likening. We were there for about 3 days before we discovered peanuts and olives were available - again hidden from display. We would have liked some background music around the pool areas, only time there was music was when they were doing water activities, and even then they hadn't got a proper mix together, just annoyingly skipping through songs on a cd so there was no continuity to the music. No tables next to sunloungers, and umbrellas too small to adequately cover both loungers in the hot afternoon sun. Pool towels were nice and large and could be changed every morning at 9.00. Someone vomited in the pool next to the towel hut. A member of staff just skimmed the lumps off the top and let everyone keep swimming in it. The neon party was good fun, apart from that, the evening entertainment was average. To sum up - room not clean enough, food was good, grounds lovely, drinks could be improved/displayed. With a few tweaks could be really great.

Great holiday at Riu. Loved the neon party on Friday with the decor, drinks, balloons, etc. The view from the adult infinity pool is simply one of the best I have seen. The different shades of blue. Highly recommend Riu hotel.
