À prominent whitewashed old building deep in the heart of mid-Wales. This is huntin' and fishin' country and this fine old inn lies at the centre of these sports - but they don't push it if that's not your cup of tea. This 600-year-old pile is a maze of beautifully restored rooms, decked with Christmas festivity when we visited last weekend. You can always tell a good place by the charm and intelligence of the staff - and on that score Brigands was outstanding. Nice pint of Butty Bach, classy but not especially cheap wines. We enjoyed the beautifully cooked food on the fairly conventional menu which was remarkably good value with very generous portions especially vegetables. Our room was cosy and impeccably furnished with a particularly comfortable bed. The room was perhaps a little, er, cosier than ideal but in a 600 year old building you have to make allowances. Overall the magnificent decor, sheer warmth and professionalism of everyone and superb food, drink and accommodation we thought Brigands was a real find and strongly recommend it.
