Quinta da Lapa

We were travelling back from the Douro Valley to our home in the Algarve and looking for somewhere to break the journey. Since I was already familiar with Quinta da Lapa's wine (delicious Pinot Noir) I was very pleased to see they had a hotel. The hotel is very small and we were the only people staying there! Obviously the focus is on wine production not the hotel and whilst it was very comfortable there were a few things missing (tea/coffee machine in the room, bathrobes, swimming pool, etc) which would elevate it to a true boutique hotel experience. The hotel is beautifully furnished with antiques which I guess were collected by the owners on their World travels. Plenty of rooms to sit and relax and maybe drink a glass of the wonderful wine produced by the vineyard. We had a tour of the production facility and sampled the wine in their stylish tasting area on the top floor. We bought 36 bottles and would have taken more had we had more space in the car! A special thanks to Isabel who could not have done more to make us welcome. The hotel is close to Lisbon but a million miles away from the stress and noise of the big city. Thoroughly recommended for an overnights stay but take a big car to fill up with wine!

This place is absolutely fabulous. If you have a vehicle and are looking to visit some places north of Lisbon (Óbidos, Nazaré, Tomar, Bacalhôa Buddha Eden,etc.), this winery is a wonderful, quiet place to stay for a few days. The rooms were spacious and immaculately clean. The buildings on the property and the vineyards are beautiful. Walking on the dirt roads by the vineyards at dawn and dusk was spectacular. The common areas of the winery open to guests were huge and wonderful places to gather in the evenings. Breakfast was included each morning, and there were numerous options served to us in a gorgeous formal dining area—what a treat. Additionally, we opted to pay for dinner on two of our nights at the winery, and the food and wine could not have been better. The whole experience of this place was beyond any expectations that we had. Thank you, Isabel! You catered to our every need. Be sure and say yes to the winery tour and tasting—it was very informative, and our host Eduardo was utterly charming. Oh, and the wines we sampled were so good! We enjoyed that afternoon immensely. We’ll definitely be back!

This hotel was literally a nightmare for us…my son calls it “The Shining.” We arrived there on a Saturday with high expectations, as I was sure that I had discovered a hidden gem! It was our last night in Portugal and I was so excited to experience a local winery. Instead of a vibrant place, we found one overworked employee and a creepy place devoid of charm or warmth. We did not see one other guest, and my son was sure that the housekeeper was going to kill us in our sleep… yes, a bit exaggerated, but we decided that the only way for this place to be successful would be to bill itself as *******. On top of everything else, we were charged $180 booking directly, and it was $122 on *********** (my fault for trusting that booking directly was the best). This experience was by far the worst that we had in Portugal. The place has so much potential, but fell short in every way. It was a horrible night and I hate the feeling of being scammed!
