Flatdogs Camp

If I could rate this more than 5 stars, I would a hundred times over! I do not think words can accurately describe or even do justice to the supreme experience that Flatdogs Camp offered on our visit there! My wife, I, and her parents visited Faltdogs Camp from airport transfer to airport transfer. We were treated as if we were the only guests who had ever stayed there. I could clearly see that all the other guests at the time were treated with the same level of care, diligence, and consideration you can only hope for, too. We made some really good friends on our drives too which was a welcome bonus. The tents were exceptional in every category. All of the staff were incredible. Our Driver and Guide, Ernest Njobvu, was the superlative factor that made our trip utterly unforgettable. With his assitance from Maurine, together their knowledge, attention to detail, and expertise in their fields made every Safari drive in the National Park feel like stand-alone adventures. Nothing was ever the same, and no questions were unanswered. Not forgetting that the food was also fantastic! One night , I had to order another plate. It was that good. Thank you to all the staff at Flatdogs Camp. Your superb hospitality and passion were felt every minute our our stay. You made our trip one we will never forget. As TA reviews have been an important inspiration for my trip, so I would like to share my experience too. Reading the TA reports, my expectations were high, and the reality has only confirmed the excellence of Flatdogs during my whole week stay! Where to start? The communication during reservation was smooth, quick and professional, the airport pick-up well organised and from the moment I have entered the Flatdogs camp I felt like in a dream or a movie! The camp is perfectly located at the Luangwa River just near the National Park entrance. You can hear the animals roaring and feel the presence of the nature. The tents and lodges are set with privacy, all are perfectly comfortable, spacious, nicely decorated, clean, all have a great view, and you can observe lots of animals just being in the camp, while resting near the pool or having a snack with coffee. All the staff, managers and owners are so friendly, polite, professional and helpful, I just felt like being with my close friends and really enjoyed being in their company. We also had great time and lot of fun with the other travellers from all around the world I have met. The food is another story! So much delicious food, its variety and quality, prepared with taste and imagination, it’s almost difficult to leave the table to go for a game drive! But no regrets! The game drives and wildlife were again amazing! I have been with Yotam as a guide, all my compliments to him! He is so passionate, knowledgeable, has a great sense of humour, keeping the tolerance for the animals. We have seen several times all the big game, leopards every day, wild dogs, lions, interactions between different species, hunting scenes. Staying longer time, I have really appreciated all the creatures, also all the small animals and all kinds of birds and the beauty of the surrounding nature! And not feeling much sure about myself at first, I really enjoyed the walking safari with Yotam and the others. Such a great experience tracking the animals, asking for explanations, listening and observing the wildlife. Thanks to Harold I have discovered the Community and Conservation projects and also this Flatdogs activity is much honourable. I felt sad in the end to leave such a great people and place, and I hope to come back soon again with all my family! For Safari newbies or veterans Flatdogs Camp is a perfect destination to enjoy the natural wonders of the South Luangwa national Park. Owners Jess and Adrian have created a relaxed, friendly yet comfortable base to see the wildlife of this extraordinary area. The camp has a clear ethos of doing things right and with a smile and sets out to ensure guests get the very best out of their visit to South Luangwa National Park. There is also a strong ethical dimension to Flatdogs which does a huge amount to support the local community and the National Park. Every member of staff from the night watchmen who escort you to your tent or chalet (to ensure your safety from the wildlife that wanders freely through the camp - we have seen Elephant, Hippo and monkeys are regular visitors), to the safari guides who take you into the park, do so in an engaging and welcoming way. We have now used Flatdogs as a base for exploring the National Park six times and every time has felt like we are going home to family. The facilities are of a high standard - it's what we might refer to in the UK as "Glamping", so don't be fooled by the word "tent" - these are huge safari tents under thatched rooves with permanent bathrooms attached some offering views over the Luangwa River with its resident Hippo, Elephant crossings and bird life. The restaurant is at the heart of the camp and serves dishes from around the world. The owners are real foodies and this is reflected not only in the variety of food available but the quality too. A special final word about the guides employed to take you into the National Park (main gate a five minute drive in their bespoke Toyota Landcruisers). These are some of the best we have encountered in 30 years of safari holidays. They are highly qualified (e.g. capable of leading walking safaris) yet approach the task of sharing their immense knowledge with humour and insight, matching their delivery to the level of knowledge of the guests. If you are new to safari, they will happily explain the basics of a Lion Pride, if you are a seasoned safari fan they are more than capable of talking about the intricacies of the ecosystem of South Luangwa , complete with Latin taxonomy.

Great location on the river, animals all around, lovely tents of highest quality and a small porch to sit and watch and relax. Everyone is super helpful, both staff and owners. Guides and trackers do their utmost to make your safari a success. Will come back.

We stayed for 6 nights in mid November 2024. We sampled most of the rooms! 2 nights in a luxury safari tent, 2 nights in Crocs Nest and 2 nights in a chalet. All were great. Crocs Nest was amazing with our own private pool and meals delivered to us. The pool in the main camp is also lovely to cool off in on the hot November days. We were lucky that we had basically no rain. The food was fab; lots of choice and great that you can eat when you want rather than there being set meal times. Our guide Chris and spotter Smart were both fantastic and we are saying that having been on many safaris across Southern and Eastern Africa. All the staff are lovely and friendly. Thanks to Jess, Ade and all the team. We hope to return.

Outstanding! Friendly people, comfortable accommodation and so many wildlife viewings right in camp - hippos, elephants, monkeys, bush bucks …. Exceeded our expectations and would highly recommend.
