Rock House Hotel

We have stayed at the Rock House Hotel in Lynmouth when under previous ownership, it had been gradually going down hill over the years. So when we heard that the owners of the Rising Sun had bought the place we thought that they may have improved the place. However, when we booked we did not realise the hotel would not be manned, with no kitchen or bar facilities. We did get an email after we had booked to tell us this. Upon arrival we had to check in at the Rising Sun over the river, and we were given a key, and then had to find our own way in and to our room. Breakfast, which was adequate at best, was served at the pub over the river. The hotel has a ‘shut up’ smell, very musty when you walk in. The room was quite small and very tired looking. We will not be staying again. The hotel feels like a ‘bunk house’, we won’t be coming back.

So, we were looking for a last minute get away in North Devon. Booked (we thought) 2 nights directly on their website. Received email confirmation however booking was incorrect (had booked for 4 adults and 2 rooms rather than 1 room for 2 adults!)...Email sent to them 3 times: no reply. Called hotel I believe around 12 x over 24 hours: no answer or answerphone. Appears completely unmanned !! Managed to book elsewhere close by last minute thank goodness!! On walking by looks deserted with odd light on...NO idea what's going on with this place !!!

Whilst we love Lynmouth and love the Rock House, the unmanned hotel situation isn't for us. We stay at The Rock house as it's the only ground floor room in Lynmouth . To go to the Risiing Sun for breakfast isn't easy if you are disabled as the bridge has no ramps. Anyway, loved Lynmouth but it's not for the less able but it was nice whilst it lasted.

Stayed a Saturday night while in the Lynmouth area and the Rock House Hotel is a great place to stay. We had room 1 which had a sea view and the constant running water from the estuary behind it, which sent us both to sleep in very quick time, helped by the soft bedding and mattress; a very warm shower, fluffy towels, and complementary toiletries. The check in process was easy, breakfast the following morning, was hot and plentiful, with plenty of choice of food and drinks, for adults and children alike. My one watch out is the free parking, yes there is free parking, but when the hotel is full, the parking cannot accommodate all the cars if all rooms have one and some of the spaces are very tight, if there are larger vehicles parked. However, a 5 minute walk away is a large car park, where you can park overnight and into the next day, so no need to get up early to move your car or feed the meter. But don't let this minor point put you off staying here, it really is a lovely place to stay and run by people who care about you and your stay.

Unmanned hotel, no food available Monday or Tuesday and no cereal available at Wednesday breakfast. Be prepared to walk to a local pub for breakfast. Unfortunately the hotel failed to warn us that the hotel roof was being repaired and scaffolding obscured the much vaunted view from our room with builders active during the days we were there.

Popped in for a drink as we were staying at the sister hotel. The carvery looked amazing and my husband kept saying how the giant pigs in blankets looked so good but we were booked in for dinner that evening at our hotel. With that the owner brought him some pigs in blankets and roast potatoes free of charge. Lovely man with wonderful staff. Super clean and classy bar. Thank you 🙏

Was very pleasantly surprised when I was given the key to my room! I was travelling on my own and normally I am given a single bed, but on this occasion I had a king size bed. Bathroom was spacious with underfloor heating and a fantastic powerful shower. Room was on the ground floor and the view from the window was amazing! Staff very attentive and nothing was too much trouble.

My husband and I spent 3 nights at the rock house along with our little dog - absolute superb location and room No 4 overlooked the sea with stunning views - room was very clean and despite it being end of season room service was done daily. Breakfast was excellent and we had a meal in the restaurant the one evening which was great - all the staff were very helpful and polite nothing was too much trouble, our room wasn’t quite ready on arrival and we were given a complimentary drink in the local pub the rising sun - if I was being super picky the reception area could do with updating but very minor detail - very dog friendly. Parking was bit tight for a big car and it was on a first come first served basis but didn’t cause too much of an issue. The hotel it located in the heart of Lynmouth with the local pub just across the road as well as little shops, galleries and plenty of places for a cream tea and a pastie so an ideal place to just park the car up and enjoy the weekend. 100% would recommend hotel will certainly be booking again - thank you rockhouse and the rising sun for a fabulous weekend.

Couple of nights stay in one of our favourite places. Chosen as it has a downstairs room which is disabled accessible. Excellent accommodation, good food (small evening menu) really friendly staff. Lovely setting with views over the harbour and pleasant garden. Hotel and Lynmouth well worth a visit.
