We had stayed here 7 years ago and enjoyed it so much we decided to stay here again on this visit to Costa Rica. I can say the location is still as wonderful as before, however we found the facilities have not had any investment put in to them and are not kept up in the fashion the were before. The rooms are full of ants and cockroaches. The staff was dutiful but not very friendly. The worst part was check out. At check out we settled up our bill and paid via credit card, the amount on the ticket was correct and I signed. Of course because of the constantly changing exchange rate what is posted to the credit card may not be exactly the same, completely understandable, but then after it was posted to our account and was pending it was removed 2 days later, then 5 days after it was posted again. At this point the exchange rate had changed to the point our bill was actually 100$ more. I contacted the credit card company and was told that the only party that can remove a pending charge is the merchant. The credit card company then informed me that technically this is not illegal and it happens a far amount with places that have unethical billing. I contacted hotel playa negra to ask why the first payment was removed then reinstated 5 days later and that this caused me to have to pay 100$ more. I was told "you were not billed twice" I never said I was? The facility, over priced only "ok" food, and unfriendly staff would give it 3 stars, but add on to that the odd billing practices I can not recommend a stay here, so many other nice places with just as beautiful location.
