Stayed here for the third time recently, as it's where my friends like to stay for the places nearby (which are stunning, it is a great location). Sadly I wouldn't stay again. My review focuses on the room and corridors, which are SO in need of a bit of TLC, paint, new carpets, etc. It has lost any charm and is now just shabby having been untouched for probably 40 years. I was very disappointed with the room (perhaps it's one due for refurb?) and the standards in the room I had. The room was very shabby, and was not even averagely clean/acceptable. It was warm when I stayed, but you can't open the casement window more than 4 cm, as it's locked at that, and the top window was painted shut, so you can't get any air into the room and it was SO hot overnight. No fan in the room and no air con anywhere in the hotel. The bath was awful (see pic), and the bath mat looked so old and stained. Lots of chipped paint in the room, chips out of the wallpaper, grubby furniture, and the lamps over the bed had different bulbs in, so one was very dim and one was like a search light. But my main complaint and issue was the duvet - I took the cover off as I was hot, and it was so badly stained, back to front, with what looked like a large blood or urine stains. Absolutely awful. It was replaced, but the second one was also covered in stains - so I slept under the cover with a towel on top. There is just no excuse for the lack of hygiene. The milk in the little cartons by the kettle was off (it came out in big lumps). The second day of my stay, the room was left unmade, with the towels just put on the bed, and the throw from the bed thrown onto the chair. The mugs had been rinsed out in the bathroom sink, but then the sink hadn't been cleaned so was left with coffee stains. Very disappointing. To be fair in this review, the public areas are good, the parts that you can see if you wander in. Like the bar, restaurant, patio outside - all great, well kept, tidy and clean. The food was also very good - no complaints there. We had good breakfasts (they will do gluten free sausages if asked), and dinner twice was also very good. The hotel is very old, and hasn't been refurbed in probably 40 years, and it is in definite need of that - bring the rooms up to date, including bathrooms. It's in a great location, and could be so much better. The rooms are just not good for the price you pay - you at least expect them to be clean and well kept. Mine wasn't, and maybe being on the top floor, with a LOT of stairs up (no lift), it was one of the less used ones. That's me being kind. I would never stay again. Already looking for better accommodation for our visit next year.
