Murray Hotel

We had a staycation in Montana for a special hunt, combined with our anniversary. On our way back home, we decided to stay in Livingston. I saw The Murray, read the reviews, and saw it was one of Anthony Bourdain’s Top 10 places you stay in the world. We like to try new adventures for our anniversary, and The Murray exceeded our expectation. The staff were wonderful, and we loved the 117 year old service elevator!! It was the perfect place to stay on the night of our anniversary. We even bought matching shirts to remember our stay.

New property, which means it is fresh and clean. I was impressed with the front desk member (Katie I think). Since it’s so new there isn’t a room diagram to allow me as a Hilton member to select my room. So I called this hotel from our previous hotel in Billings, and asked which of the listed rooms on the top floor was farthest from the elevator. Katie told me which one would be best and also told me it was not occupied the evening before. That allowed us to check in early, which was much appreciated. This is a good location for a visit to Bozeman and then an easy drive down to Yellowstone.

I rarely leave reviews, but in this case the front desk agent was unwilling to resolve our problem, even though it was a direct result of his mistake. Our stay was decent, although the “breakfast” was just toast and coffee and the room was too hot for comfort. The real problem is that our stay was cut short. At 8:45 my boyfriend and I went to the car to load some bags. The front desk agent said goodbye and we replied that we would be back in a few minutes. At 9:15 we returned to our room to find the door propped open and a housekeeper inside. She was startled but acted professionally and apologized. She had already thrown out our portable coffee maker, toothpaste and toothbrush, food, and other small items. We retrieved the more valuable items from the trash to clean off. We then went to the front desk and asked the agent if he could replace or reimburse us for the smaller items. He blamed the situation on the housekeeper, even though it was entirely his own fault. The man told the housekeeper to clean our room almost 2 hours before the 11 am checkout time, despite the fact that we still had our key and informed him that we planned to return. He then offered us $5 cash and laughed at us when we said the actual value was more. I work in the hospitality field and there is no reason this man should have handled this so poorly. The invasion of privacy alone is unacceptable and he should have done more to make it right. It is also never okay to pass blame instead of taking responsibility. I am extremely disappointed in the carelessness of this employee.
