Our room was right next door to the kitchen for the restaurant. Banging, loud noises until 11 pm; our room smelled like a fryer. Nothing special about this hotel.

The hotel says it has been renovated but I question when. It reminded us of The Overlook Hotel in The Shining. Carpeting was stained and unstretched. Paint was beat up. The worst of the room was that there was such poor thought given to storage. The closet was an open slot in the wall about 12” wide with 5 hangers. No way to hang things in the bathroom. Bedside “tables” were 3 sided boxes with no shelf or drawers. The two chairs had no table with them so you couldn’t put a cup or a tablet anywhere but the window ledges. This classic hotel had lots of potential but was all a miss. Best things—excellent downtown location and modest price.

Stayed in the Gin Hotel while visiting and touring Virginia Military Institute. Wanted a hotel in town and walkable to the school and it did not disappoint. Easy walk to both VMI and Washington & Lee campus' as well as a variety of restaurants and shops. The rooms were great, very comfortable and upgraded. Parking was tricky as it's in the rear with no access to the hotel, must walk around the hotel once you park the car. It loses a star because of the breakfast, basically all prepackaged food (with very little variety) and you eat it in a hallway unless you bring it to your room .... they can do better, at least open up the dining room for the restaurant. Suggest having breakfast at on the cafes nearby!!

Wonderful hotel. My wife and I have passed through Lexington many times and this time we had the opportunity to stay a night. We selected this hotel for its location and charm and we’re not disappointed. We had a room on the fifth floor and the elevator ride, car to the right is the one you want to take, was interesting to read that it was hand operated. Our room was surprisingly large. The bathroom was updated and large with all amenities that one expects. Yes, the television is small, but do you visit Lexington to sit in a hotel room and watch tv? We enjoyed a late afternoon/ early evening drink on the deck at the Juniper. The deck provides a wonderful street view and yes, there are shaded parts. Continental breakfast has a posted time of 06:30 but it was ready by 06:15. Parking is located behind the hotel.

We stayed here one night while driving west. The location is excellent. You can park your car and walk to shops, restaurants, bars. It is a cute downtown. The hotel used to be the Robert E Lee hotel, built in 1926. Beautiful elevator! We were on the second floor where the restaurant Juniper is located. They serve a continental breakfast on the second floor, which was exactly that! Our room was a King room and it was quite large with a large recently redone bathroom. I found the accommodations, for the price, to be fine. But rooms do not have refrigerators and no dresser in ours, just a desk and two sitting chairs. The ceilings are very high, which is cool. Hotel was quiet. We did happen to meet the owners that have had I for 10 years. They want to make more improvements as the money allows. Our bedroom carpet could use replacing. If you elect luxury accommodations, this is not that, but a nice place to stay.

First the good: the room a/c was cold and the roof kept the rain off of our heads. Towels were provided… The bad: the building is old so that gives it some character, but the accommodations were run-down and the carpet in the room was FILTHY. See picture. I have never stayed in a hotel with a dirty carpet - simply disgusting. It makes me question if anything in the hotel ever gets cleaned. One other point. The “lobby” reeks of artificial scent - so much so that it gave me a headache. I would stay elsewhere even if it cost more…

Based on the on-line pictures and write-up we had high expectations for this Ascend Hotel Collection property. Unfortunately, they went unfulfilled. Other than the convenience of its central location there was nothing special about the property. All the parking was in the rear or on the side, but the only entrance was through the front doors. A seriously sloping sidewalk made getting the rolling luggage cart stable a real challenge...there was no bellman or valet. The roof deck dining on the second floor was only open in the evening so you couldn't go out there to read or take your morning coffee. The lobby had no seating or anything to recommend it as a place to relax. The "complimentary" breakfast was minimal and served in the elevator lobby on the second floor. So, no pool, no tennis, no golf, no stables, no gym, no bell service, no valet...BUT...they charged a "Resort Fee" of $10.00 a day. What For? When I asked at the desk the answer I got was basically, "because they could". The in-house restaurant "Juniper" was decent, but it wasn't operated by the hotel, it was a contract company operation. At over $200./night we didn't get what we were paying for...would not stay there again.

The location is perfect and the parking very convenient for visiting downtown Lexington. The exterior of the hotel and some of the common areas look nice. The room seemed to be clean. The staff was friendly, helpful, and accommodating. The hotel definitely needs an overhaul. The rooms looked very dated. The walls were bare, no color, no artwork, etc. The carpet looked like it could be replaced. This could be a glorious place but the rooms were very drab and unappealing. The breakfast area is squeezed onto a landing and there are five tiny tables with two chairs each. Families would need to use more than one table to fit. As the tables and chairs are close to the small breakfast buffet, it is not easy to get food without bumping into the chairs and tables and is difficult for more than one or two people to be getting food at the same time. I don't know that I would stay here again--it would depend on the rate. The location is super and if the rates were reasonable I might stay but I would not be willing to pay a high rate to stay in the gloomy room. I hope they will refurbish the rooms.

Had a 2 night stay at the Gin Hotel in order to explore the local area - and it was perfectly located for this. Nice location, easy to wander around 'old town' and great to have parking included. Room was spaciou & clean with a huge bed & coffee making facilities, though was perhaps looking a little tired and could do with an update / addition of an in room fridge. Breakfast good and plenty to eat.
