Queens Hotel

Do not stay at this hotel. Dirty towels, dirty bedding, no food provisions, no tv, bed bugs. Mattress solid and squeaky and mattress protector with lots of black bits on it. Management don’t care. Smells of mould.

If you're after the Ritz don't bother. If you're after a comfortable night (yes the beds and linen could do with an update), love history - (don't forget how old this place is the upkeep of the building would not come cheap), the view across the water and bonus of watching the ladies braving the chill waters on Bains Beach early morning, then give this place a go. Close on street parking. The proximity to Lerwick, the Loderries (yes fans . Jimmy Perez house was right there!) are a plus. Our windows worked fine, the bathroom was clean. The staff whilst not always visible, were there if you needed them. I hope Harvey you can one day get this old hotel up and running as it once was. Would I stay here again? Absolutely! Just for the atmosphere alone, I would rather this than a B and B anyday, it was part of a fantastic and memorable experience of Shetland.

Had reservation 4/3 & 4/4/2025. Arrived no staff at front desk; had to call phone number for staff; bags of laundry in foyer; non working bar and restaurant.. looked at rooms - horrible condition- a fire trap. Limited view of water thru 24”x36” window that didn’t open. Paint peeling; bed not even level. Scaffolding along street side exterior. Very run down. We had to remit in advance and owner will not refund our money. We canceled after seeing rooms and condition of property. Don’t let hotel’s web site photos fool you- this property is a dump.

Plus points, in a great location and the staff we did meet were lovely. No parking but there is free street parking nearby. Negative points, the rooms / hotel in serious need of updating and redecoration which the hotel is under going at present although theres a sense it has been o going for sometime. Tiny TV which you may need to turn on to drown out the sounds (every sound!) from the room next door. No restaurant or bar, although you can use the sister hotel, The Grand (optimistic title), which is only a 3 minute walk. Slight musty smell that permeates everywhere. No need to bring an alarm clock as the friendly seagulls tap on the window with their beak very early in the morning.

The hotel was clean, warm but dated. The staff were lovely and very helpful. The fact that there was no restaurant meant no meal or breakfast but the staff advised me of lovely alternatives. I believe the hotel has just changed hands so probably just getting things organised and i hope it works for them.

Terrible room and good luck trying to check-in. I don’t usually leave negative reviews even if I have a bad experience but this hotel is really terrible, if it was a cheap rate you could understand, but we were knocking on almost £300 a night. Arrived there at 2.00pm, the time that check-in opens. No one there, reception has a phone and a note to call for assistance. There was 3 numbers, first two didn’t work. Third I got through to someone who said they would just ‘pop down’. 15 mins nobody arrived, tried calling the numbers again, nobody answers. Tried again and again and nobody responds. Ended up waiting almost an hour in their reception which has no wifi, no phone signal (so no 4G or mobile calls can be made), so sat waiting doing nothing. A guy arrives through the front door and gives us a key, no apologies, no small talk, just room number and here’s your key, just make sure you know there will be no breakfast. Room was terrible, wallpaper peeling off everywhere, heater massively dented, shower head held together by tape, windows rotting and permanently open, the tiny tv didn’t work, everything metal in the bathroom rusted. To be fair, the mattress was relatively comfortable but a very dated room that needs a lot of work but has been neglected for a long time. This isn’t just one room, this is the second time I have stayed there and the room (and reception experience) was just the same. The problem is that there is a lack of hotel rooms in Shetland and so you end up having no choice if you leave it late to book.
