This is probably the second time in my life I’ve written a negative review as I only do so when I feel strongly about something. I’ve just travelled over from New Zealand and the negative experience at this pub has made me very grateful for the level of service we take for granted in NZ. Over there service means a friendly smile and ‘a nothing is too much trouble’ attitude - that is just the norm in New Zealand, which is why I am so shocked by my recent experience in this tourist-heavy pub. I’m visiting my elderly mother and we made a trip to the beautiful village of Lechlade to have lunch at this very pretty pub on the side of the river Thames. As we were there to enjoy the beautiful surroundings we sat at one of the tables on the waterfront and I went in to order my first British beer of the trip - which I was very much looking forward to. I ordered a half of a 3B Arkell’s and had a sip and it was delicious, so I took it outside for my mother to try and left it on the table with the slim plastic menu sheet propped up against it. The wind immediately blew the menu and beer over. Looking back it was a really unstable glass unsuitable for serving outside - very top heavy with a narrower base and the light gusts of wind were surprisingly sufficient to topple it! I was horrified so I ran into the bar with the little bit left in my glass and explained what had happened and asked if they were able to top it up in the circumstances. I had originally been served by a lovely young man and lady who had given me a taste of the beer - but this time I was met by an older larger man - who I had approached as I assumed he was probably the manager. His response was to look at me as if I was an alien - he said in an abrupt and grumpy fashion - ‘yes you can have another one but you’re gonna have to pay for it.’ That would be unheard of in New Zealand where we would’ve been met, at least, with a sympathetic response even if followed by an explanation as to why the cost of a quarter of a pint of beer was too much trouble for them to do as a courtesy. It was not just the response but the manner and attitude with which it was delivered that meant our party of 3 immediately left the restaurant without buying any more drinks or the planned lunches (which averaged £16 for a fish and chips). Such a simple thing would have avoided a very unpleasant experience for an overseas visitor and has now tarnished the reputation and standing of this pub and what would otherwise have been a lovely English pub meal in a beautiful village.

Fantastic setting and had good expectations and initial impression. Shame the experience was dampened by the nonsensical policies and the lack of common sense. 4 adults wanting to dine on pizza and drinks but when we asked if we could buy baby food for our 1 year old from the shop next door I was told we couldn’t. What establishment does not allow a baby to eat their own food. Shameful.

Stopped for a drink one evening it was getting dark so didn’t see I had to pay and got a fine! Would have been nice at the bar if they could remind new visitors as other places do because they are professional and care about their customers! Bar staff need training in customer care very abrupt!!! Seating by the river although beautiful location very dirty and shabby real shame whole place could be cleaner and more inviting.

Went there for lunch and we both had ploughman's. Mine with ham and chicken liver pate for my wife. We sat out by the river where there is ample seating with excellent views. The drinks were nice and cold and the food absolutely delightful with a good sized meal as well. Everything was good and fresh and the bread rolls were crusty but light and fresh inside. Looking at other meals you could see they were ample proportions and looked good ensuring I will have the cod and chips next time. The staff were friendly and so helpful. My only small moan is the parking with disability bays requiring the same fee as others. It is not that expensive at £2.70 for three hours and I think it is done to deter drivers frustrated with an appallingly run car park on the opposite side of the river. There are better ways to do it, especially as it seems Arkles employ an outside company to manage it Lobbying the local council to sort out the other car park would be a good idea as well.

It was good, although the floor covering in the bathroom could do with replacing and we had problems connecting to the internet at times.

It was by the river and a short walk to town. My single room was good, plenty of tea and coffee!! Nice walks along the river.

The room as great. Another fan in the side bed area would be nice as it was so stuffy due to lack of air flow. Some mold in the shower area.

Poor customer service and no room soundproofing. The location was very nice. The room was clean and well presented. Unfortunately there was zero soundproofing between rooms therefore we could hear all conversations, tv, shower, toilet flushing and unfortunately snoring all night from next door. The service in the restaurant was particularly poor on one occasion when we had the cheek to ask for chips with the lasagne rather than garlic bread. I was told in no uncertain terms how garlic bread was cheaper therefore we couldn’t get chips, despite the other meal we ordered having chips with it, so all that was required was to throw a few extra in the fryer. They need to work on their customer service. The bed wasn’t the most comfortable, but didn’t sleep anyway due to the constant noises from next door, not to mention the bin lorry arriving early morning right outside the window which faced the car park.
