Country Inn & Suites by Radisson, la Crosse, WI

Booked through trip.com and the hotel somehow erased the card used by Trip to book it and charged my card… I caught them the first time when I was checking in when she tried to charge me and she cleared it… said only $50 would go on my card then for incidentals… which it did, but then again the next morning when I was checking out, I looked at my account and they had charged me again in full for the room… It’s been 4 days and the hold still hasn’t fallen off… That’s too much money to be taking from people in error for them to have to wait days to get back… Definitely not happy about it and won’t be returning. Other than that, all was decent.

Decent value for the price. This is an older building (former Hampton Inn) that has been updated. Pros: Friendly front desk staff, nice style to the remodel, good sized rooms, restaurants/chain stores nearby, decent food selections at breakfast, and a good location with a short drive to most places in town. Cons: There was a musty smell in the halls and my room, my bed was uncomfortable and had a paper-like mattress protector bag, the building is showing its age in some locations (particularly around the pool), and the property borders a U-Haul dealership which has incredibly bright flood lights at night which poured into the room even with the curtains pulled closed. The most off-putting aspect of the stay was being presented a “house rules” agreement upon check-in which I don’t typically associate with hotel brands at this level (beyond the standard T&C agreement at booking). This was paired with signs everywhere throughout the hotel common areas about acceptable behavior (e.g. breakfast food must be eaten in the breakfast room or an overflow meeting room, additional signs by the pool explicitly saying not to hold your breath underwater, etc). If this is what is necessary to run the place, I guess I understand. The text reminder of late fees if you don’t check out on time had the same feel. The whole tone of communications created an unpleasant, unwelcoming atmosphere that made the place feel like a school cafeteria as opposed to a mid-tier hotel. I probably won’t return.

I have to give this hotel points for cleanliness and comfortable beds, but the facility as a whole is older and needs a lot more maintenance than it has gotten. The thermostat for the AC unit wasn't working, so we either got heat belting out at 73° or cold air at 72° that kept getting colder and wouldn't shut off. After ten minutes in the shower, I was standing in ankle-deep water -- and there was no way to adjust the drain. Thy did have more recently installed charger outlets for phones, etc., but our plugs fell out of the outlets. Overall the room was cramped for two people with luggage. The coat closet was in the far back corner of the room rather than by the door, so both inconvenient and taking up space where we often put suitcases. Staff at check-in were polite enough, if perfunctory. But the next morning, at 8:40am, we received a "reminder" that checkout was 11am and that we needed to "VACATE" the room, threatening late check-out fees if we weren't out on time. In two weeks of travel, no other hotel sent us anything similar, let alone more than two hours before the deadline (which we easily met, btw).

Amazing. We would stay again. Highly recommend. T

Beds and room were clean, but had a strong smell of someone smoking pot, and then housekeeping tried to cover it up.

Very nice place. We enjoyed the jetted tub!
