Hotel Rozvoj

The hotel is located outside the Klatovy town center in a neighborhood about a 10 minute walk from the town center. Parking is available on site and one of the few positives if you have a rental car. The Trip Advisor photos are misleading. At first sight it looks more like a bunker and is built like one in all concrete construction which needs a lot of work; however, the entry lobby, bar area, and terrace are quaint modern and soften the harsh effect of poured concrete structure. The hallways are dark and musty—you have to find a light switch. The rooms are spartan but clean. NOTE: there is no air conditioning, no safe, no room refrigerator . “Basic” would be an overstatement as a description. There is a tv with Czech stations with one English Channel (France 24). The restaurant and terrace are a welcome but distinct positive and somehow do not match the rest of the hotel. The staff is courteous and competent; however guest wishes are not well communicated as I said at check in I did not wish for/need room service yet the next morning a worker tried to enter my room—good thing I was there as there is nowhere to secure valuables—there are no “do not disturb” tags nor a place to hang them. All that being said the rate is very reasonable and if you can put up with some Soviet era modernity, or lack thereof, and just need a place to lay your head for a night or two this place can serve that purpose but come with no expectations outside of very 1960s basic.

Bottom line: VERY, VERY inexpensive but VERY, VERY basic. It was my only real choice as I had a rental car and parking at a hotel in Klatovy is virtually non-existent. The restaurant terrace and excellent food make up for some of the “basicness” which saves the place from two stars. From the exterior it looks more like a bunker but that dissipates once inside with a very inviting view to the terrace flanked by a rathskeller pub and quite nice restaurant. If you have a car there is free parking but it can get crowded. The room is the epitome of basic, spartan, but, clean and orderly—no safe for valuables and no fridge—also beware NO AIR CONDITIONING. I was here in a shoulder season so it was just ok. Staff is friendly but attention to detail not good. I asked to not have room service but the cleaner attempted anyway—good thing I was in the room to turn them away as they were preparing g to enter—there are no “Do Not Disturb” tags. They also still use physical room keys. I do have to say the food was really good with a very nice menu with lots of variety in food and drink—somehow this aspect does not pair with the room experience. Also on the positive it is a short walk from the main square and several interesting and historical attractions which also saves you from having to pay for parking. Nevertheless, if they were to add a fridge, a safe, some hangars, and add some AC units they could have the beginnings of four stars. It seems like the owners are trying to make some improvements and focusing on dining experience is not a bad investment but this hotel really needs to bring the rooms into this century. Would I stay again? In a pinch and if it was early fall.
