The first thing that greets you as you enter the hotel is the smell of stale beer, not the best of starts. The room we were shown to had no wardrobe only a small rail with 3 hooks and 3 mismatched hangers - presumably left by previous guests, I have never been in a hotel room without a wardrobe. We were there on the hottest days Scotland has seen in recent years and I asked for a lighter duvet to replace the 10.5 tog duvet which was on the bed and was told that that was the only weight the hotel had. This weight is NOT suitable for use in the summer. Our room wasn't serviced on the first morning and on enquiring, I was told that you need to ask for this - absolutely astonishing. Sloppy housekeeping on the second day. The best I can say about the breakfast was that it was alright; nothing to write home about. All in all, a very disappointing stay and we won't be back.

We arrived just in time to unpack and go to dinner. The food was excellent and we finished off the evening with a few drinks before heading to bed. Breakfast was superb and set us up for a walk around Kirkcudbright. Music in the afternoon was to my taste, as was the beer. I look forward to visiting the Garret again.

This was a short-break stay in Kirkcudbright based on a three-night special price. The superior double room was spacious and the bed very comfortable. Furniture and bathroom are old-style but functional. The room faced the street but it wasn't busy so not noisy. No curtains or blinds on the windows - instead, you have to close internal shutters which was quaint but effective. Breakfast was good - plenty of choice and cooked breakfast made fresh to order. We also had dinner on two nights. There isn't a dining room so dinner is in the bar - so not great for ambience but the food itself was very tasty and great value. Important for us - there was an unusually generous choice of vegetarian dishes. Hotel staff were friendly and helpful. The hotel doesn't have a car park but we had no problem parking in the street in front of the hotel.

Great staff/breakfast A lot of our issues were our own. We arrived too early to check in on a holiday so there was nothing open where we could pass the time. Our room was on the third floor and my husband just had surgery so I had to schlep the heavy bags up the stairs. That's all on us. Even the loud pub guests exiting and waking us up is understandable. The bed, however, might as well have been a bag of cats. Very lumpy and uncomfortable. The good news was the delightfully friendly staff and delicious breakfast before we left. And it was only one night so anyone can survive a bag of cats for 1 night.

Quiet little town, hotel was a great location to walk around and explore. It looked like the room had recently been renovated with new carpet and paint. Highly recommend for an overnight stop.
