Black Bull Hotel

Called in for a drink with a friend. Flies everywhere. On the bar, on the ceiling lights, all over the tables. Asked the bar staff why and the response given was because of the farms! There were no flies in any of the other establishments we had visited that day. Went into the beer garden to avoid the flies and there were old discoloured plastic plants everywhere and a scruffy garden. Opened our scampi fries only to notice once we had eaten them, they were out of date! Such a shame as there are limited beer gardens in the town and could have been so much nicer if someone cared. Crossed over the road to the Sports and Social club to be met with a warm welcome, no flies, and lovely beer garden with beautiful views.

Music very loud downstairs on Saturday night. Could hear it even with ear plugs in. Toilet flush broke. No breakfast despite being relatively expensive. Windows broken and very difficult to open. Wish we’d booked a local B&B. Provision for bike storage.

Made to feel welcome Overnight stay, check in seamless comfortable room can’t comment on the breakfast as had to leave early Can’t fault the staff and Full on Fran is a star 🌟 😁

Great stay for two night break on the coast to Coast trail. Staff was friendly and helpful. Friday nights are very loud with karaoke so be prepared! Food was good, but basic pub food. Breakfast had several choices and the avocado and poached egg was especially good. There's an awesome Indian restaurant called the mango tree just a few buildings down. Laundromat behind the Black Bull hotel which was very convenient. About 6 pounds to run the washer and one or two for the dryer. There's a tourist info place in the same area also and they have taxi information if you want to bypass the boggy part of the hike from Kirkby Steven to Keld. No buses on Sunday.

Okay for hijers Just right for our needs, hiking the Coast to Coast. Could have done with a bit more breakfast but hey…..
