We bypassed two other pubs to get to this one and did we regret it. We called in for lunch and really wished we hadn’t. Ordered the Chicken schnitzel (over cooked) and the chips tasted like they’d been cooked in lukewarm fat.

This is a review of staying at the Tontine as a hotel guest, not as a restaurant customer. The Tontine is an elegant and historic building in a prime location right next to the old iron bridge. Unfortunately it is very basic inside and in urgent need of improvements. Our room was spacious and clean and appeared to have been recently decorated. But the bathroom was cramped, the hot water intermittent, the toilet flush was unreliable. The curtains and pictures looked like they had been bought at Poundland. The wardrobe was a rough wooden frame. However the beds were comfortable - although only a single pillow was provided on each bed. The carpets in our room and throughout the building were thin and cheap. The stair carpets needed cleaning. There were various items, including paint tins, cluttering the areas at the bottom of the stairs. It appeared that redecorating had started but not been completed. We went into a large old room on the first floor and were shocked to find it full of dirty, broken furniture and rubbish. The "free" breakfast available before 9 a.m. was woeful. No tea or coffee available, no jam or marmalade, inedible fruit. No staff in sight. Apparently if you waited until 9 a m. somebody would be able to serve other breakfast items. There was almost no sign of any staff, with the exception of those working in the bar (which was busy at night). This hotel has a lot of potential but needs a major overhaul and more staff.

Came for breakfast which was our first time, quite a largeish group of 6 adults and 2 babies. 5 adults had the large breakfast and I had the veggie option. I don't eat eggs and asked for them to be put on a separate plate for my baby, the portion was huge! He was very happy. Only slight fault anyone could make was the bacon could have been cooked a little longer and although they have a good veggie and vegan breakfast, there is no milk alternative or herbal tea option which is strange for a hotel and bar. Looking to make this a monthly meeting though

The restaurant accommodated us last minute for a Sunday dinner, great service, amazing food and very attentive. The food was presented very well, and was delicious, will be returning. When asked for the bill arrived very quickly. Friendly atmosphere with great views overlooking the iron bridge.

Me and my family have been a few times now for Sunday lunch and it’s always delicious! my mother says it’s the best she’s ever tasted, we’d like to give a special shoutout to Sammy as she is so lovely with every customer not just us but her service is always excellent and always a warm welcome with every staff member :)

The food was luke warm, chips undercooked, although the garlic bread was delicious. The building itself is a lovely old building with lovely period features inside and is directly opposite the historic Ironbridge. Dogs are allowed which is always a bonus for us. The staff was warm and friendly. Our only grumble was the food

A very warm and friendly welcome. The staff were kind, welcoming and made me feel very much at ease. As I am quite an anxious person, this is very important to me. Although I did not eat in the hotel on this occasion, I look forward to doing so on my next visit. The light bites menu looks perfect for lunch!
