Along the way, you will pass gorgeous colonial-era homes, the local library, a cemetery established in the early 1700s, the Nathan Hale Schoolhouse, and amenities like Common Ground cafe, the Sweet Shop, the Gelston House restaurant, and the Goodspeed Opera House. A quick trip down Rt 9 brings you to the villages of Essex and Chester, which are known for their boutiques, restaurants, antique shops, and other amenities. Along with boating and hiking (and cross-country skiing in winter), the house provides easy access to swimming at the Moodus reservoir and Cedar Lake, and visits to Gillette Castle. East Haddam is located 20 minutes north of Old Saybrook and other shore towns, where there is public access to ocean beaches. 20 minutes to the north is Middletown and Wesleyan University.Outdoor only security cameras are located outside the main house’s basement door, outside the main house’s north facing stairs overlooking the woods, and outside the upper house’s front door on the hill behind the main house.
