Elephant & Castle

Went in for food today, great pub, food with quality ingredients at a fair price. Had four different meals all excellent.

The Elephant and Castle in Holmfirth, while aesthetically appealing, falls short in several basic areas. Upon check-in, I was informed that weekday breakfasts were limited to a continental option, though a bacon sandwich was kindly offered and delivered. However, I was required to pay an unexpected £50 deposit for room damages upfront. The room was exceedingly cold, despite the radiator being on full blast. The towel radiator in the bathroom provided minimal relief but was difficult to operate due to its height. Night one was disrupted by rattling sash windows with loose latches, forcing me to sleep in a T-shirt due to the Arctic-like temperature. On the second evening, the staff directed me to leave my key in the door and exit via the fire escape the next morning, raising concerns about the deposit return process. Breakfast was unavailable, contrary to prior information. The room lacked turndown service—coffee, biscuits, and the bed were untouched from the previous day. In the bar, no last orders bell was given, and service abruptly ended at 11 pm without forewarning. The back-of-house areas were disappointing, though the room presentation was commendable. Wi-Fi was limited to the bar area, and poor 4G signal compounded communication issues. Ultimately, I left for The Bridge Hotel for a proper breakfast and decided to return to my preferred hotel for future visits. We came in on the 5th April for food. The missus loved her fish and chips, it looked and tasted fantastic. Unfortunately I can’t say the same, I ordered burger and chips which looked spot on but unfortunately it didn’t taste good and it seemed like a frozen burger patty that lacked any taste. Also the waitress didn’t seem interested at all, she was plesent enough but she seemed too busy to be working on her own. As the missus loved hers I’ll be giving it another go.

Excellent stay Alison was an excellent host. She made us feel very welcome and even gave us a free upgrade. The room had everything you need and the bed was comfy. Top marks for the breakfast the following morning. Added bonus was the free onsite parking.

The staff was amazing and very helpful yhe property was very clean and it had everything we needed we will definitely stay here again.
